FS: T420 / i5-2540M / 4GB / 250GB HDD

I am selling my workshop computer, a clean T420. It is fully intact with no broken parts, a crisp classic keyboard and mouse and a clean display. The screen is a 1600x900 TN panel with no bad pixels or bright/dark spots. It does exhibit the usual mild screen-door effect that the ones of this generat...

FS: W530 / i7-3920XM / K2000M / 32GB / 500+250GB SSD's

Now that I have upgraded to a max spec P53, I am selling my trusty max spec W530. It's been around the world with me multiple times, and I'd like to find it a good home among the enthusiasts here. The sale includes the laptop itself, a 70++ battery, two 170W AC adapters and a full retail version of ...

Re: P53 RTX 5000 Noisy Inductors - Probable Cause and Solution

The inductors vibrate against the motherboard, and the "spreader" is just there to try to control that as far as I can tell. I also have the 3 year warranty, and if there is some other issue with it, I will be undoing the modification and sending it in. Fingers crossed that the rest of the machine i...

Re: P53 RTX 5000 Noisy Inductors - Probable Cause and Solution

RoHS..."the road to hell is paved with good intentions" So far so good in terms of inductor noise. I pulled up the datasheet for the FETs and they confirm my suspicion that the bracket was for managing acoustic problems, not for cooling anything. The thermal resistance from the junction to the top o...

P53 RTX 5000 Noisy Inductors - Probable Cause and Solution

TLDR: I messed with some thermal gap pads and nearly eliminated the VERY loud buzz that the laptop made when the GPU was under load. I did this because an RMA seems about 5% likely to achieve the same outcome now that I have gotten a look at the design. It's a good machine which I am now even happie...

Re: P53 RTX 4000 throttling

Hmmm, good to know. I have a P53 with RTX 5000 coming next week, and I am assuming that it will have the latest BIOS and whatnot. It sounds like I will need to keep an eye on the throttling and look into the non-Quadro drivers. This is the first new Thinkpad I have ever bought (all of the 6 previous...

With respect to the 65W and 90W PSUs, in my experience the laptop will not charge with them. When plugged in to the W530, the battery light will blink a few times and then remain dark, and and the laptop will not charge. It seems to only work with the 175W power supply.

Re: Urgently looking for a workstation laptop

I highly recommend AGAINST the W540, mainly because of the touchpad with integrated buttons. It is really awful. It misses clicks and is generally a pain to operate. Using it for CAD is completely useless since the middle button is not dedicated. This is why Lenovo came up with the W541 (one of the ...

Dear all, I am an Engineer and researcher, always on the move, and I run many simulations on my laptop, read big data and compile often C++/fortran source code with Visual Studio, plus an intensive use of Matlab. Often all of those simultaneously. Therefore, I am looking for a very powerful Laptop....

Re: W530 CPU Question - Heat/Fan Noise With 3920XM? Other Mods?

Folks, Glad I found this thread. I'm looking for a used W530 with a i7-3940xm (similar to the 3920xm you guys are using). My concern is heat and fan-noise; I'm not concerned about battery-life given I use the plugged-in power brick 99% of the time. So does the extra 10 TDP (55w vs. 45w) create more...

Perhaps I'm confused... but wouldn't a T61p board have the Quadro FX 570M instead of the NVS 140M? Sounds like a T61 board. EDIT: You are correct. I was incorrectly thinking that the T61 model had Intel integrated graphics, but that is not the case. The original post has been corrected. Thanks. Any...

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad W540 impressions

Have you observed any CPU / GPU performance throttling issues? I was about to buy a W540 a couple of months ago, but then I read about performance throttling being a huge problem due to a firmware bug, and it sounded like Lenovo never acknowledged or fixed it. So I bought a maxed-out W530 instead.

W530 CPU Question - Heat/Fan Noise With 3920XM? Other Mods?

I am going to be retiring my trusty Frankenpad at some point in the next year or so, and the only replacement option that I have come up with is a W530. I pored over dozens of other machines, new and used, and in the end the W530 seemed to be the most powerful option with the fewest objectionable co...

Darn, I was hoping that suggestion might work in a W5-0. Here are pictures of the backs of the screens. I think the most recent T model without keyboard change is the T520. What you think about it? Same as W520, but with lower specs. It is a great machine if you can get one with a FHD display. Also, I believe it is possible to swap in an IPS Philips display, but I am not certain. Got any info on the ...

Tips and Tricks for Trackpoint + Current Ultranav Drivers

A while back I posted a thread with a recommendation to use a specific old Ultranav driver so that middle-mouse button functionality would be preserved. Well, it seems to result in some system instability on Win8.1 so I knew I needed to switch to newer Ultranav drivers. But that would mean a broken ...

Crazy. It boggles my mind that after all the labor to forge chips, there is still profit to be made. I mean really, how many people are still trying to buy GPUs for laptops form that era? Enough, apparently!

Very cool! (there is a pun in there) I like it.

I wonder if you could build a small heat exchanger that fits into the ultrabay? THAT would be super awesome...fully self-contained water-cooled Thinkpad.

Re: Install a 1066MHz FSB CPU on T61 (including Core 2 Quad)

RMS, what heat sink and fan were you running before that were giving you thermal issues? I have found that both the type of thermal paste used, AND the co-planarity of the heat plate to the silicone surface are crucial to efficient cooling. Most off-the-shelf thermal pastes are junk, truthfully. I w...

3) Add R160 and R215 as shown in this image . (provided by el-sahef) You don't need to add R160 and R215 - they already soldered and waiting to be cnnected to D22 ;) It is supply for GTLREF. And it can be used as source for GTLREF_2. You forget 1 thing - you need modified BIOS and modify ACPI table...

Should solve your issue.

Also, I like Win8.1 a lot, especially after Update 1 which causes the full-screen stuff to act more like normal "Desktop" programs. It runs at least as fast as Win7 while using ~500MB less RAM on my Frankenpad.
