Good point. I'm now finding good deals on refurbished T400/T410/T420. I'll bet you can get 15" models as well.

There is no discernable difference between the two. Get the one you find with the best display and CPU.ac12 wrote:And now I'm in the same boat.
Though I have a T61 that I am maxing out on the horsepower, cpu at 100% a little too much.
So I'm trying to decide between a T5xx or W5xx.

I just installed the latest version on a W500. Went very smooth. Every device is recognized in device manager.
I had it in discrete graphics mode in BIOS when I upgraded.

WTB - old pen-based thinkpad
I'm looking to buy a 700T/710T/730T/360P/360PE. Working condition is much better. Willing to pay above market. Need for a demo.
Let me know if anyone has anything for sale.
Would also consider renting one.

He has a SATA drive - you have an mSata. The mSata only fits if you have no WAN card.

Neither sticks out the back but the 6-cell has some ridges that stick out on the bottom and is heavier. Twice as much time though.jmurch wrote:One more question if anyone knows the answer. 6 cell or 4 cell? I don't want it to stick out the back like the 9 cell does on the t61.

Won't run faster than 1600MHz without serious hacking.

Re: X1 SSD
I work with confidential information that for legal reasons cannot be stored in the cloud - even with encryption. I could segregate out the other information and only keep the confidential stuff on an SSD (still encrypted) and get bye with 256G. I'm still thinking about it. My guess is that to get 4...

Re: X1 SSD
Why is that? It it a warranty violation to open up an X1 Carbon? You can do quite a bit of surgery on most thinkpads without voiding the warranty. Assuming I don't care about warranty - do we know the drive type? Is it a 7mm drive? Is it uSATA? proprietary? Is an HMM out yet? Also - anyone know why ...

The 4 cell is good for 4 hours tops. The 6 cell is over twice as much capacity. 63Wh vs 28Wh.

Re: X230: How many displays can it drive?
Not so. 2 DVI monitors work fine on the dock. No converters.
The Windows driver basically asks you which output to use for screen 1 and which for screen 2. There is no way to configure a third screen.

Sorry - I was unclear. The W520 is available with the i7-2860QM which I was comparing to the i7-3720QM he suggested. It has a bigger cache, but, in fact the DRAM speed is the same.

The bluetooth card is easy to install. It doesn't seem to require any separate antenna.
I think the camera requires a separate front bezel - but it turns out that it is not too hard to remove either.

Re: X230: How many displays can it drive?
Looks like the answer is 2 displays. I hooked up 2 externals with a Dock+. The SW would give me a choice of any 2 - but it was really clear that I could not use all 3 - either in clone mode or extended desktop. Since I could do both externals - I don't think there was any port conflict - it is a dri...
