T43 hinge sizes

#1 Post by Gonzaleitor » Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:04 pm

My 15.0" T43 left hinge exploded when I opened the lid yesterday and I was wondering if the 14.1" hinge is the same size. I have a dead 14.1" that can serve as a donor, but I don't want to open my 15.0" all the way to find out they ares different sizes. Has anyone did this job previously?

They seem to be different in the HMM, but maybe they are somewhat compatible. If anyone knows it would be of great help!

I don't have a 15 inch to compare to but I highly doubt the 14 inch hinges would work, vast majority of cases they're made different. HMM backs that up.
You can certainly try though.

The 14.1 and 15" offerings are actually totally different monsters in terms of the lid assembly.
First the hinge metal casing is of different height between the two (since 15" lid is significantly thicker), R5x hinges are even taller.
Second, 14.1" hinge casing width are drastically different between L and R, 15" are symmetrical.
Third, the lid itself is of TOTALLY different material too. 15" T4x lids are ironically made out of weaker plastic with brass threads, whereas 14.1" lids are a solid block of magnesium just with the same rubber paint job outside so you can't tell.
Also, while I have never had any 15" hinge disintegrating on me, I had like at least 3 14.1" T4x left hinges busting on me, and exactly the left one (since it's hollow on the inside to allow both antennae to route through). Kinda ironic that 14.1" T4x likes to have busted left hinges while its competitor Dell Latitude D600 likes to have busted right hinges (too small).
