Noise and "Fan Error" on Thinkpad X61 tablet
Noise and "Fan Error" on Thinkpad X61 tablet
Hello ,
My Thinkpad X61 Tablet recently got very noisy. I suppose it is also hotter then usual.
Finally it started announcing Fan error every time i boot. Then it works after second start but gets hot very quickly. I dont thinks the fan ever stops. (is it normal?)
I know i can buy a new Fan on Lenovo's site. I also red that there is a software for fan control - but still can t find the proper one.
Perhaps it is worth controlling something before i dismantle the whole thing.
In fact i use it every day for work ( sketches, meetings, drawing etc...) So i look for less risky option.
thank you in advance

If you are getting a fan error there is no work-around beside fan replacement. The FRU# is 42X4399 and the maintenance manual is here.

That software is TPFanControl062. I set up my CPU power setting to adaptive and adjusted the limits of tpfc62 so that fan doesn't work at all most of the times. My CPU temperature wanders around 50-55'C and my X61T is ultra quiet. Since the fan is less used, I expect it to live longer.hikee wrote:... When you are installing the fan be careful not to bend the mainboard and make sure the chip surfaces are ultra clean for clean adhesion. My experience from Sony Vaio SZ-1 is that the connection between chip surfaces and cooling equipment makes great impact on cooling efficiency. Sadly I remember servicing old Thinkpads where previous service guy forgot to remove protective folio on the replacement fan before installing them. Thank God those CPUs didn't get that hot.
Good luck.

I managed to change the Fan .. long and risky procedure.. But result is great. The old one looks identical .. i don't know wheat was wrong with it. it was getting really hot and some connexions (like USB ports) started malfunctioning ( i guess that was related with heat ?). I was told several time that such a heat was normal - now i see that its not.
Thanks everyone for advices.

What would be a good economic replacement? Where to get from?Harryc wrote:If you are getting a fan error there is no work-around beside fan replacement. The FRU# is 42X4399 and the maintenance manual is here.
