x200s upgrades questions

#1 Post by rezenee » Thu Jun 29, 2023 12:55 pm

I have just purchased an x200s with the high res panel, and i was curious about a couple things regarding it.

for one, what is the best ram for it? I know it caps out at 8Gb, but is there a speed i should look for in particular? Even if the difference is minor i would like it to be the "best" just so i feel better

as for any other upgrades, i dont think many exist? i wish the screen wasn't TN, but i dont think theres anything i can do about that if i want the higher resolution. it already has a usb 3.0 expresscard54.

i'm pretty good with hacking so even if theres some obscure mods that are hard to do, i would be interested in hearing them. I am already planning on librebooting it.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I believe the X200s uses PC3-8500 memory. Feelings aside, in my experience there's little practical difference from one brand to the next. I usually buy used on eBay.

If you flash the whitelist-removed BIOS from mydigitallife (I also uploaded it to archive.org) you can install almost anything into the MPCIE slots. There's lots of interesting contraptions. NVME drives in m-key adapters work.

8GB upgrade requires using 2rx8 "dual rank" 4GB sticks with 8 chips/side. Speed doesn't matter, the chipset times them at the lowest possible speed.
