X100E problems [Warning: Pictures]

#1 Post by phinktad » Sat Jul 01, 2023 6:48 pm

Hello, new user here. I just bought a ThinkPad X100E.
Item is a lemon in a way. Received unable to boot, keeps entering BIOS, dead battery, no charger (lucky my T400 charger is compatible).
So I opened the whole thing, reseated the ram, connected the disconnected cables, repasted the CPU. Assembled and managed to boot, but Windows cannot start and cannot do recovery. Windows not booting is not much of an issue because I can use my Linux. Windows can be reinstalled later and can try some BSDs.
Here are the problems I'm facing now:
1. The Trackpoint cable was badly bent. Although I can slot it in, it is not detected. On ZevenOS and Devuan, only the trackpad is detected. It seems one side of the flex is using clip, the other side is soldered to the Trackpoint board. I can buy a used keyboard for the Trackpoint ,but it's a waste of good hardware. How do I fix this?
2. The lid can't close properly now. It seems the palmrest on the left side (above the fan) cannot go in properly. I have tried pushing it down and screwing it, but it pops up slightly. I tried opening everything earlier again, now it goes in more but there's still that gap. Is there a way to do this properly?
Any advice is appreciated. Pictures are attached for reference.
Thank you in advance.
Edit: updated links. Imgur needs me to register so I'll just use Imgbb.

It is a bad idea to use Google-drive for showing pictures here.
Try using https://imgur.com instead.

Thank you. I just updated the links to Imgbb since Imgur seems hard to use and need me to register first. Waiting for approval.

Update: I disassembled it, saw that the screw mounting was on top of the logic board and the fan wasn't assembled properly (leaving a gap between the frame and fins). So I opened the fan and assembled it to fit and place the screw mount below the logic board. Now it closes properly except a bit on the right side because of the WWAN cable. Other than that it's working fine with Windows 7 starter. Not as hot as when using Devuan Linux.
