Switching a 701c screen onto a 701cs laptop?
Switching a 701c screen onto a 701cs laptop?
Hi Everyone
How much has to be changed to put a 701c screen onto a 701cs machine? I.E switch a DSTN lid to a TFT lid.
Just the display and inverter?
Just the display and the ribbon?
Just the display, inverter and ribbon?
Just the display, inverter, ribbon and bezel?
Just the display, inverter, ribbon, bezel and daughterboard?
Just everything?

Re: Switching a 701c screen onto a 701cs laptop?
The HMM lists distinct screen and bezel for C and CS, but only a single ribbon cable, and the bottom system board (with CPU, video chipset and LCD connectors) is only differentiated by CPU speed. Both screen types were apparently offered with both CPU speeds. So it should just be screen and bezel... Should...
The HMM unusually covers the disassembly of the lid/screen, and has cautions regarding display and backlight cablie routing when replacing the screen.

Wow that's weird they use the same cable from the mobo to the screen. I guess the DSTN is a slightly different size so it uses different lid mounts and obviously a difference size frame.
So a whole different lid then. I now regret selling a faulty machine with a good screen and lid...

Re: Switching a 701c screen onto a 701cs laptop?
Hi - have a look ,it's in tpvol2.pdf - it lists only 1 part for cover A (lid, screen assembly back), two for cover B (screen bezel), one display ribbon. I don't think you need have any regret for the parts you sold.
I suspect the screen supplier was told to make the TFT & DSTN assemblies interchangeable for the 701 - same connectors/location, same mounting points, etc. This would have been great progress from the 355/360/750/755 design where different screens had completely different lid depths, bezel, ribbon cables, etc. The 701 was designed at Raleigh, which was the main US manufacturing PC plant at the time, and they would have known all too well the warehousing and assembly costs of all these different screens and associated gubbins within for 'minor' display spec changes on the same model...
... or as the marketing people would say, "it's just an extra little letter 's', after all"
