Thinkpad 770 Bios mod for cpu upgrade

#1 Post by franjimo24 » Sun Dec 10, 2023 8:14 am

I found a sweet 770 on ebay at a good price and it runs very well on win98 with the 233mhz pI. Also found a pII 400mhz for sale but need the bios mod to make it work. Can anyone point me to where I can download it?

Very late reply to this, but are you sure that you need a BIOS mod? I thought that the PII 400MHz on an MMC-1 board was a straight drop-in replacement for a PII 233MHz?

You are correct that the Pentium II 400MHz should be a compatible drop-in replacement for a Pentium II 233MHz on an MMC-1 board. Generally, processors with the same socket type and compatible architecture can be swapped without requiring a BIOS modification. Always double-check the motherboard's specifications and compatibility list to ensure a smooth upgrade. If you have any concerns or specific details about the motherboard, feel free to share, a

I tried upgrading the 770 cpu as mentioned but I keep getting an error 192...the bios recognizes the CPU but laptop will not boot into windows, it goes to test/restart menu and then it just shows error 192 on screen. I've since got my hands on a mint 770E that came with a 266mhz P2, That one does boot without any issues after upgrading CPU. Not sure if the 770 motherboard/bios is locked to not accept anything beyond 233mhz.

Error 192 means either a bad/dead CMOS battery, or if there is a fan, it's not/poorly connected.
Get the T770 manual from the HMM link at the top of this page.

Thanks, I have a copy of the HMM, and had already tried replacing the cmos battery as well as the fan. I only get the error with the P2 installed so I figured it had to do with the bios or something.

You cannot get past the 192/CMOS reboot screen on a 770 without successfully replacing the clock battery.

Also, if you're shown a password screen and press enter and get a tick, that does not mean there is no password - it means you didn't guess one.

I've restored a bunch of CMOS-locked 770 machines. That's the biggest issues apart from the palmrest usually wearing down to bare metal.

cheers
