T440p + Ultra Dock, but dock video out (HDMI) not working

#1 Post by Arf the Lab » Sat Nov 04, 2023 6:58 pm

Hello, all.

Fairly frustrating day: I attached a new Ultra Dock to my T440p, connected HDMI cable to a monitor, kept the laptop closed and fired it up... no picture on the monitor.
Opened laptop, went into BIOS and configured to use the dock display... no picture on the monitor.
Went back into BIOS and set a 10 sec. delay in case the monitor needs time... no picture on the monitor.

Booting into Win7, I can't seem to figure out any way to switch the display from laptop screen to external monitor.

Yes, my monitor is set to HDMI and yes, the monitor works. Tried two different, verified working HDMI cables. No difference.

Can anyone help me with this? I've owned several other Thinkpads & docks over the years, never had any issues getting external displays to work. So needless to say, I'm a mite confused.

Thanks in advance.

Does the T440p have nVidia graphics, or just Intel?

I only see drivers & settings for Intel HD graphics 4600, nothing about nVidia.

It's possible that the dock has a problem. Would've been nice if you have another thinkpad with the same docking connector to test it with.

Using a MiniDP-to-HDMI adapter plus a HDMI-cable, have you tried the displayports on the dock and/or the T440p?
I use the T440p port regularly to hook up to a TV with the above.

If all else fails, check this: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/soluti ... tra%20Dock

Well, I got it working just fine. Turns out the problem was 100% user error: Since the dock doesn't block the laptop's power input, I'd been plugging the AC adaptor into the laptop. Noticed tonite the dock has a power input of its own, tried it, et violà: HDMI out works.

How embarrassing.

But thanks for jumping in to help out, y'all.
