Presentation Director shortcut Fn + F7 not working anymore
Hi everyone,
Last Friday I updated the Presentation Director program to the latest version available at Lenovo (2.57). After this update, the Fn + F7 shortcut is not working anymore. When I try to use it, the display switches to the external, dual and them back to LCD, as a normal Laptop without Presentation Director installed. Before this update I was using that black menu. All other shortcuts (F5, F9, F3, F8, etc) still working.
I tried to uninstall it and install the old version (2.55), but didn't work. I tried to install all lenovo thinkpad drivers and utilities, and them install everything again, and the same happens.
Does someone knows any solution for this issue?

I have the same problem on my R60 after updating it recently. I don't remember there being an update on the presentation director but I do recall an update of thinkpad key preferences (don't exactly know what it's called, comes down to the fn keys). I haven't looked for a solution yet. Anyone having one?
[update]
I just ran system update again and I have an optional update of Presentatuon Director (v3.03), so if that was the same version you updated to, that doesn't cause the problem. I'll install the update now.

I just did some updates today, including the following (amongst others):
Presentation Director, version 2.57
Hotkey Features, version 2.03.0705
Now I was having the same problem you guys are describing. Fn + F7 would only cycle through the display settings, but not bring up the menu. I tried several things, among them: downgrading Presentation Director to the previous version 2.56. No dice.
What worked was downgrading the Hotkey Features driver to the previous version, Version 1.31.0610.

FYI, Presentation Director version 3.03 is not listed as compatible with the T4x series.

Which version of Presentation Director do you have installed? The Hotkey Features driver 1.31.0610 may not be compatible with Presentation Director 3.03.
I wonder why you downgraded the Hotkey Drivers if your system was working properly?
You appear to be using a R60, which uses newer version drivers than the T4x series.

I have the latest version of Presentation Director (3.03) and I downgraded because the F7 did what the TS described: not opening the Presentation Director menu but switch laptop/external screen (although right configured in Presentation Director).

You are using the correct version of Presentation Director (3.03) for your R60. You also need the following:
I think there could be a bug in the Hotkey Features driver version 2.03.0705 that is not enabling the Fn + F7 function, but I could be mistaken. If you have the original XP installation on your R60, there should be a directory such as C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\HOTKEY\ and from there you can install the original version of the Hotkey Features driver that came with your R60. The original version of Presentation Director should be in C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\PDIRECT\. It is possible this directory has a different name on the R60, but that is what it is on the T42.Lenovo wrote:Installation instructions

This seems rather basic, but since no one else asked the question ... did you try running Presentation Director from the Start menu, and checking the Fn+F7 settings?pescador_sp wrote:Last Friday I updated the Presentation Director program to the latest version available at Lenovo (2.57). I did, but it didn't work for me. I even changed the setting to something else, closed the program, then reopened and changed it back, but that had no effect to bring up the Fn + F7 menu. Only reverting the Hotkey driver to the previous version worked for me.tomh009 wrote:This seems rather basic, but since no one else asked the question ... did you try running Presentation Director from the Start menu, and checking the Fn+F7 settings?

It appears that we have this same problem on (at least) one of the new T60s we have. It won't bring up the Presentation Director menu with Fn+F7, and it won't autoswitch profiles when docking. This is with the original drivers on the T60.GomJabbar wrote:I think there could be a bug in the Hotkey Features driver version 2.03.0705 that is not enabling the Fn + F7 function, but I could be mistaken. Should I look for an older Hotkey Features driver? Will this also address the automatic display profile selection when docking?

I appears that snessiram above did not have success using the older drivers available for the T4x series on his R60. YMMV. I do not have access to a T60 to test. However another T60 owner reports this same problem in the following thread. He has not posted a response to date since he started the thread.tomh009 wrote:It appears that we have this same problem on (at least) one of the new T60s we have. Those of you having this problem (in XP), try this:
Download and run the hotkey driver I linked above. If you have an R60, use the same one as for the T43. Note where it extracts to.
Run the setup.exe in that folder. Choose the uninstall option, and remove each of the components listed, starting from the bottom and working your way up.
After that is done, close the window and choose the option to reboot.
Once rebooted, run the same setup.exe and install the driver. Reboot once more, and check Fn+F7.

had the same problem for a while.
SeanM solution itself didn't help but when I uninstalled presentation director 2.56 and reinstalled 2.57, making reboots as often as I could, I was able to make Fn+F7 key combination to work. futhermore, I installed Thinkpad Power Managment Driver which wasn't installed before.
thanks for the solution!

I don't exactly know what I did but I have the latest drivers of everything according to system update and fn-f7 works again. Maybe there was a bug in one version somewhere?

For all those that are running the "latest drivers"...
I would appreciate that the ones that have Fn + F7 working, that they post version numbers of Presentation Director and Hotkey Features that they have installed. I also would appreciate knowing which model ThinkPad the system is working on. Saying you are using the "latest drivers" is unfortunately a little vague.

This is the combination that did not work for me on my T42 running XP.
* Presentation Director, version 2.57

I see that the description for the Hotkey Features driver has changed. When I posted about this about a month ago, Hotkey Features version 2.03.0705 was listed for Windows Vista/XP/2000 for the T4x series. Now it is listed for Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit for the T4x series on the driver matrix page and on the download page, yet if you look at the readme file for the same download it shows that it is for Windows Vista/XP/2000 (you have to read the fine print).
Furthermore, if you look at the two pages below, the first one is for the T4x series while the second is for the T6x series, and they are both for the same Hotkey Features version 2.03.0705. The difference is in the description. The first one is Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit, and the second one is Windows Vista/XP/2000. Yet the file name and version is the same.

I "found" that I had issue today. I had updated presentation director last moth, but had not updated the hotkey features, but strangely nothing seemed to amiss till today .... for some strange reason, Fn-F7 did not bring up the menu, and simply switched between laptop, external and laptop+external .... I came here, searched for the issue and found this thread, and was able to get things working back again.
Even after months spending time here, this forum continues to amaze me.

I installed the newest HotKey version which is for Vista onto my XP machine. That broke the Fn-F7 capability. I used Software Installer (not Update) to uninstall HotKey. That uninstall took out a lot of other drivers with it (Keyboard Customizer, Web Navigation, On Screen, etc.) I made a note of all that, let it uninstall, reboot, and then re-install all that stuff and version 1.31.0610 of HotKey. The Fn-F7 returned. ... JDH

need help - first post
I did a clean install of WinXP on my T42 and cannot get the Fn+F7 function to work (it just seems to cycle between normal/ext.monitor.only/LCD+monitor). After reading through this thread, I still can't figure out which combination of drivers to use. I have tried the usual un/reinstall procedures w/o success. I prefer to manually install the IBM drivers/utilities because previously one of the Software Installers/Updaters installed all Chinese versions of the ThinkVantage software (I'm in Taiwan). Older driver versions don't seem to be available on www-307.ibm.com. I would appreciate any help you guys can provide.

I can't find any sign of this using msconfig or searching my entire C: partition. There do seem to be corresponding tpfnfx.exe files in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\HOTKEY. Is the fact that TPFNF7SP.exe is missing significant?

I also had problems with Fn+F5 only working for Bluetooth and being unable to control the WiFi radio. I followed some thorough un/re-install instructions for the LAN drivers and Hotkey driver and the problem was resolved (unfortunately, I forgot to bookmark those instructions )
T42 2373-IRV WinXP SP2
Drivers currently installed:
- Hotkey driver: 1.31.0610 (7avu43ww.exe)
Presentation Director: 2.57 (7jua07ww.exe)
Power Management driver: (7kku06ww.exe)

Honestly, I don't know what's the problem with Fn+F7 on your machine, the combination you're using is correct and seemed to have worked for other users.gixxerwimp wrote:snip.............Side Note:

The thinkpads in my vicinity with both Windows XP and Windows Vista have TPFNF7SP.exe in the startup which is connected to Presentation director. If any help, the location of TPFNF7SP.exe is C:\Program files\Lenovo\NPDIRECT\TPFNF7SP.exe .
I think the following thread was the one you were looking for regarding Fn+F5 problem:

Re: need help - first post
There is no C:\Program Files\Lenovo\NPDIRECT\ folder on my machine. I just un/re-installed Presentation Director 2.57 again to give it another chance, but nothing has changed. The default installation folder is C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities and these are the files that were created when I last installed. No other files were created or modified.ryengineer wrote:snip.....

Is the Lenovo\NPDIRECT\ folder the default installation location when using System Update?
Do you think it's worth giving System Update 3.0 a try to fix my problem? (Even though I hate using those automatic update packages cuz they usually install something I don't want ...)
MOD EDIT: Overlimit picture modified to link.
