I may set the record for warranty repairs--I think my T41 has been back maybe eight times now--all for different things. The DHL guy recognizes me on the street, he's visited me so many times. One time it was the motherboard, and the rest have been little things, like loose power connectors (am I th...

Well, I never much cared for children, and don't have any, so I guess I wouldn't fit well in the corporate world. Most of the people I deal with are rational.

I can't believe I'm the only one who's had problems with that little yellow jack. Mine is always coming loose, and it's also had to be replaced when the little spring that presses against the outside of the male fitting broke. Right now it's grabbing none too well, and I'll probably need another tri...

VP or not, you're going to have to convince him that he's the problem. I'd tell him he's got two more drives to figure it out, and then you're cutting him off, for his own good, so that he doesn't lose something really important some day. And I'd back it up with memos to his boss, even if that's onl...

I've had my T41 for two years and a few months. In that time it's been back home six or seven times, has had a new hard drive, wireless card, and motherboard. I think the warantee is a great deal. Further, given my experience, I do NOT want a new keyboard, handrest or motherboard--the ones I have ri...

I have a CaseLogic sleeve I really like. It's cheap, fits perfectly, is made of their wetsuit sponge stuff, so it's nicely protective. But the best thing about it is that it adds almost nothing to the size of the laptop, and fits in anything. If I'm just going to work, I'll slip it in my shoulderbag...

I don't quite understand what you're doing to have this problem that none of the rest of us do, but nevermind. What about armoring the exterior underneath with something like graphite/epoxy board? Or even 1/8" sheet aluminum. It doesn't seem like you'd have to do something too exotic to stiffen thin...

I've had this happen--usually it's just a crumb of something underneath, and I can blow it out, or, push both ends and the center down hard, all at once--you'll hear a crunch as the bit gets smashed into something smaller, and then you can just blow it out, no big deal. Stop eating crackers while co...

I use water and a paper towel on the screen, and occasionally some windex, to get off the last bits of oil. I know there's a lot of noise about this, but I've been doing it on this T41 for almost three years (and on every computer I've had previously) and the only screen problem is a damaged spot wh...

My previous laptop was an extremely cheap Compaq 732US--junk, really. However, my T41's speakers are grossly inferior: so bad, relatively, that it's ridiculous. I guess IBMs really are business computers. I use headphones with mine anytime I'm listening to music. It' not the end of the world.

My prediction (because that's what happened to me) is that they will reload the hard drive, proclaim everything is OK, and it won't be. Then you'll have to send it back again, insisting that they replace the motherboard, and that will solve the problem.

There's a little door on the bottom--the size of a business card--open it up and take a look. Basically, you just plug the memory in, push the card down so it locks under the little clips on each side, and boot up.

My touchpad/trackpoint buttons get strange sometimes, and it's just crud caught underneath. Usually a much harder press than usual will fix it (crushing whatever's caught), if that's the problem.

I think you'll find a lot here. The bottom line of the story seems to be that if you put something on your USB connection that demands a little more current than the controller chip likes to give (which may still be within USB specs...), it fries. And the solution is a new system board. I had this p...
