Re: Suggestion for new Thinkpad
i am a macbook pro retina user now, since march 2013. my t60p flexview screen was beyond aged. i thought i saw lenovo starting to offer ips panels soon. i bet they're nice, but some of the benefits of this apple are the widescreen being 16:10 instead of 16:9, using imessage with my iphone, and the c...

Re: 1st apple laptop
i was not particularly interested in switching to an apple, or being a conformist. i taped a couple postcards over the white apple light. i was proud of my thinkpad while it lasted, and liked being able to inform people that the photography and magazines i made were done on it. most people i knew wo...

yes, i read the thread about inferior color gamut before deciding,
I believe the FlexView I was using also had inferior gamut.

Re: 1st apple laptop
well, the point of my original post was, yeah, there are some things that aren't as logical coming from a solid thinkpad and win xp, but if i could get used to it, it means mostly anyone else could, and some things work better then xp did. having a store to shop at, and contact for questions, is a b...

Re: 1st apple laptop
it is a shame, but i've had to accept that there isn't one that i'd be 100% happy with. i'm still pretty happy about it though. i'll be curious about future windows options, maybe they will make something better, but now that i've dealt with switching hard drive formats, backup systems, software, et...

Re: 1st apple laptop
older cpu, gpu, and 8GB of RAM might be ok today, but what about in 3 yrs when software gets annoyingly resource heavy. even current web pages are hard for some older computers. it's hard to judge what "most users" will need. having 2 browsers with 3 windows and 30 tabs open ar once, sometimes that'...

Re: 1st apple laptop
i used 4 of the mouse buttons, but not the trackpoint. when i decided to switch to apple i thought i would be buying the $1800 refurbished model. i went higher in part because apple gave me credit with 0 interest, which makes purchasing much easier, and partly because i'm going for longevity. i don'...

Re: 1st apple laptop
unfortunately, $900 up front + $112 / month for 18 months for a computer in hand is more affordable then a frankenpad in the mail. a return policy makes a buyer more comfortable as well. the size/weight wasn't that much of a factor to me, until i had a super slim computer to realize how nice it can ...

1st apple laptop
i purchased an apple laptop for the 1st time. i'd always been on windows, and had been on a t60p w/ winXP for 6 years, after having desktops before that. i had some discussions going debating frankenpad vs an hp vs retina macbook pro. basically looking for an ips panel, current OS, current processor...

Re: most color accurate ips laptop screens
do NEC and eizo use ccfl?
i mostly have read people are considering cffl the outdated backlight, though that it was more well distributed light.
from the bit of research did, i noted that t60p flexview was 6 bit, hp and dell laptop ips are 10 bit, and retina macbook pro 8 bit.

Re: most color accurate ips laptop screens
thanks,
it's kind of a tough situation when internal hardware (chips) seem to be getting more powerful, but screens and machine size/weight are not improving, and then software is becoming more resource heavy, instead of getting more efficient, whether it's internet browsing or photoshopping.

Re: most color accurate ips laptop screens
how bout the t530 or w530?
i know i know, not ips, but there doesn't seem to be much other option for a laptop with current processing power, to sustain future years of use.
thanks,

Re: most color accurate ips laptop screens
well, it's good to hear the hp and dell aren't really worth it. i've calculated out that a frankenpad will cost around $1250. this is for the led flexview, 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM, win7 pro 64 bit, and penryn, and an ebay t60p. the ebay t60p is so i can continue using my current t60p, and be able to ret...

funny you were in the same boat 5 years ago as i am now,
upgrading t60p vs switching to mac,
what did you decide, how did it work out?

Re: most color accurate ips laptop screens
great, thanks. i've been using the t60p flexview since dec 2006. it's been great. now it seems dimmer and yellow, especially compared to any new led backlit screen. i do like to use my laptop in various places, including outdoor. i wouldn't do photo work outdoor, but i can barely do emails or spread...

Re: working off SSD, vs ultrabay HDD, vs usb HDD
thanks, i wasn't sure anyone would respond. i feel it's a general consensus around here that lenovo thinkpads are not great, and that others have considered switching to apple, i'm curious if anyone that did cares to comment. about the hp 8570w, any idea how to tell if a model listed on the outlet h...

Re: working off SSD, vs ultrabay HDD, vs usb HDD
i'm kind of stuck here, i've been googling and reading forums. this post got long. i sit on my computer in 4-5 different places in my apt, a few different cafes, and outside in a park(doing non photo work), so i'm not considering a desktop. i'm not really into using an external monitor, probably due...

Re: working off SSD, vs ultrabay HDD, vs usb HDD
how bout video ram?
128 or 512, compared to a new computer's 1GB.
my scans are 20x30", or 24x24" 300dpi, 1GB w/ layers, in 16bit mode.
currently the redraw time can get slow at 66.7-100% zoom.

Re: working off SSD, vs ultrabay HDD, vs usb HDD
aha, interesting. usually my t60p with 4GB (3GB) max RAM, is fine, but lately loading even a few raw files in bridge cs6 gets slow. it also gets slow when i have full size film scans from imacon scanner. i got through them all, but it took patience, and PS crashed a number of times. zooming to 100% ...

working off SSD, vs ultrabay HDD, vs usb HDD
hi, i'm wondering which drive location would be the best for working on files in photoshop cs6. i have win xp and PS running on my t60p primary drive, a 7200rpm HDD. the ultrabay 7200rpm HDD has my working tif files. i've always heard it's better to work on files that aren't on the same drive as the...

hi, every couple years my t60p's ultrabay HDD gets full, and i need to upgrade to a larger one. the last one is hitachi travelstar 7200rpm 750GB drive. new egg claims there is 1TB one now available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145875 but is hitachi still a company? do th...

Re: where to buy battery, 3rd party vs oem
thanks for responses, to me one year of use isnt worth it, i'd rather have something that lasts. i saw third party batteries ranging from $30 to $100 for 9 cell for my t60p. i have heard about bad fits, thanks for the info. someone in another thread somewhere posted that he could not tell the differ...

where to buy battery, 3rd party vs oem
i've searched some other threads here, and have seen some suggestions for what they think are decent batteries when they first get them. but what i don't ever hear is anyone chiming in who has had a 3rd party battery for a long enough time to know if it was just as good as an oem one. anyone out the...
