Funny how somebody else has been up the same path, found the same wrong driver in the package. I might try his solution if I get a bit of time.

Following help from someone here I tried another driver, from here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS028931 Notice the above page says "13 Aug 2012". UPDATE:

Trueimage 13 (2013) does work with the SATA controller, in the AHCI mode. Well, it boots off the CD and discovers the HD OK. I have not tried restoring a backup with it yet.

In the process of the HD change I lost the R&R partition - basically because Acronis Trueimage was not capable of copying it over. This didn't matter as I use TI for image backups anyway...
