Re: How unreliable are x32s?
Thanks a lot for the links, I should have been more thorough in my searches. Cheers, No worries! I used the wrong query at first and missed it. Many hands do make light work. 'Tis also the least I can do for your offering me an option to my using a heat gun and infrared thermometer to toast ...

Re: How unreliable are x32s?
Ok, I know that this is an old thread but "candle trick" has got me intrigued and Google isn't being my friend. :( Anyone care to explain? TIA.... I must thank you so much for bringing this up! :D Sadly my own X32 is pretty much dead now (am using my X20 due to the X32 hardlocking after ~20 minutes...

Re: X20 rebuild problems
Minor note: I've had several situations where I couldn't boot my X20 and left it alone for about a month or more and it started to work just fine again. I do understand your liking the X2x series. I've found that my X20 runs some items oddly better than my X32, no matter what the OS is, and at time...

Re: X32 still usable?
If you do choose Ubuntu, I'd personally go with 8.10. Even though both of the 9.xx releases are by far polished with their small issues, they never faired very well on my 2 Ghz X32. #! would likely be a better option than Ubuntu though... Recently, I personally have had excellent luck with Arch Linu...

Re: How unreliable are x32s?
I've had one die on me, my father's (X32 @1.8GHz) , but am thinking that it may be a BIOS or chip solder issue, and am kicking around the idea of "jump starting" it via a dead board or doing the candle trick on all of the major chips due to how it's acting. My own (X32 @2GHz) currently has a hardwar...

Re: x31 CF slot question: max transfer speed?
'Tis cool. I'm kinda partial to 98SE myself, if only it supported more... Shall have to give this some serious thought! The main downside about using the IDE-CF adapter, is that you lose your HDD bay. The notable pluses is that you gain in reduced power consumption, dB levels, and drop resilience. A...

Re: x31 CF slot question: max transfer speed?
For what it's worth, I tried a Patriot 233x UDMA5 card from Fry's in the CF card slot of an X31. Transfer speed was 1.4 MBps. I did some research and found out about the hdparm utility. Here's its output (hdparm -I /dev/sdb): ... What this provided, was that a UDMA compatible CF card was operating ...

Re: x31 CF slot question: max transfer speed?
Bother. In my lethargic driving a couple of nights ago, I cut a corner too sharp and seriously damaged the exterior of my car.
I also lost the auction, so I'm going to hold off until next month if all goes well.

Re: x31 CF slot question: max transfer speed?
I just payed the bills, and well, I have enough to low-bid for a CF reader. I'll post progress as I can. Also, I got to looking at the 1394 port, and noted it to be the 400 version. I'm thinking on how to stuff a USB reader and hub in there so as to retain a port (and replace the firewire/IrDA with ...

Re: X32 won't boot to POST
The rattling was a false-positive. It was actually the CMOS connector that I had released moments before. While I was in there, I gave the motherboard a visual inspection. It appeared that nothing was cracking, coming loose, etc. So, I'm now off to town and shall see if the CMOS just needed t...

Re: X32 won't boot to POST
I tried it without the wifi card as well as the modem to no avail. External video is a no-go. Same with the sequence. However, as I was just flipping the notebook upside-down, I heard some rattling inside, so I'm going to investigate the source. Also, I noted that I had left the CMOS battery hooked ...

Re: x31 CF slot question: max transfer speed?
I'm afraid that I went AWOL on half of the Internet during the winter... I never got to around with ordering the CF reader. I'm also currently in the position of not being able to likely afford one for a couple of months. I am still interested in the project, but am unsure at this moment if I...

X32 won't boot to POST
Welp, my father's X32 started to not boot to POST a couple of weeks ago, so I lent him mine until I could figure out as to what's going on. I let it sit after trying the removal of all motherboard extensions and replacement of the RAM, as my X20 had once before started to work again after experienci...

Hard Lock With Ethernet BIOS-enabled on X32
I was wondering as to if anyone has dealt with Debian & Ubuntu kernels, post-2.6.20, hard-locking when the ethernet is enabled. I've not yet tested other distros. I have the no-1802 patch applied to the BIOS (Version 3.02). I have not tested it without. It works in Windows 2k. When the ethernet is B...

Here is a good article to get a basic overview of Wireless USB.
And the Wikipedia Article.
Note: Wireless USB is not the catagory of USB Wifi adaptors, but is instead a wireless standard for USB devices.

(Thanks for the links Maccess, when digging around in this some more I found a 32bit PCMCIA CF reader on eBay for ~$20 with shipping for those who are interested.) I am afraid that I cannot help you, but am also a DD-WRT user. I am running 24-micro on my WRT54G. The QoS sucks but the uptime answers only to the flow of electricity. Am passively looking for one that can run the full version, as I wouldn't mind seeing the full power of DD-WRT or some other firmwa...

Found: X3x left "mouse button" & keyboard beze
I was wondering if anyone has just the cover available for the left mouse button that is compatible with the X32 series. Am willing to buy a partially working keyboard if needed. I am also looking for an X32 compatible keyboard bezel. The condition, or the lack thereof, of the stickers is irrelevant.

I took her in yesterday and had a fruitful trip. (I was keeping your pointer in thought, Harry) I found that the local Office Depot no longer had a Thinkpad display and only an Ideapad (Why do people like these?). I know that there isn't much else to add to the discussion, but I've heard enough horror stories about the quality of the current Toshiba's to make me get even a Compaq (I consider them to be the lowest of the low, no offence meant though). HP dv9810us Question
I'm helping my mother find a notebook that suites her hands. (Due to the stuff she'll be doing on it, anything new outside of the netbook range would work for her) She's decided that she likes HP's dv9810us, and I can agree with her on this. Now here's my question: Does anyone have anything against ...
