Re: Just got a Thinkpad X60s type 2673 :)

I'm using a 5200mah battery made by Denaq. It cost me $75 on ebay and lasts almost 5.5 hours with wifi on, bluetooth off, and screen down to 50% brightness.

Re: Just got a Thinkpad X60s type 2673 :)

I just do Internet Connection Sharing from my phone over bluetooth. It works just as well, I don't have to worry about carrying anything extra with me since I always have my phone anyway, it's cheap, and it keeps my USB ports free. If that's an option for you, that's what I did and haven't looked ba...

Re: Adding an external video card... hehe

Here are some YouTube videos I found of people who have successfully pulled this off: StarCraft 2 with external Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 Mass Effect 2 with external ATI Radeon HD 5770 It's really quite impressive to see that kind of performance out of a PCI-E 1x link. My main problem right now is that...

Re: Adding an external video card... hehe

UPDATE: I found a developer's log posted to the NotebookReview forums and it looks like they're adding a slight delay on initialization to avoid problems with the BIOS white list. The thread is 150+ pages! Here's another thread outlining some performance numbers and caveats. It's 125 pages... there'...

I always keep an old FAT16 USB key handy loaded with FreeDOS. An external USB CD-RW also does the trick. :thumbs-UP:

For what it's worth, sometimes the VLC doesn't pick up my hotkeys under Linux too. Totem and Rhythmbox work perfectly though.

Adding an external video card... hehe

I'm thinking about getting one of these Mini PCI-E to PCI-E 1x adapters and sticking a Geforce 8600 GT in it (using an external power supply, of course) to add a little more grunt to my trusty X61. I know that it'll be somewhat crippled on the 1x bus and I know that I'll have to use an external moni...

Re: X60s battery dead; battery or system itself to blame?

I was fortunate to get my X60s for a VERY low price because the previous owner thought the X60s had gone bad when it was only a dead battery. Lucky me. Same here. I got my X61 for cheap because the previous owner thought the laptop wasn't charging the battery anymore... Of course, a $40 ebay...

Re: Install Ubuntu 10.04

I think you'll find VirtualBox also has no support for x64 OS's - I tried Windos Server 2008 SBS 64Bit in VirtualBox and it said the setup failed to load becuase the CPU was not 64Bit compatible I'm running Server 2008 R2 (which is 64-bit only) in VirtualBox under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I'm running a Ralink RT2860 (from OxfordTEC ) in my X41 and it works perfectly fine under Windows 7 Home Premium. I didn't even have to download drivers, the Windows installer recognized it right away and the LED indicator lights up and Fn+F5 works too! I'm using Zender's modified BIOS to bypass the...

Re: Adding a Bluetooth Daughter card

I just installed the BDC-2.1 module in my X61 last night. It wasn't too bad, it only took a few minutes to pull the bezel away and snap in the module. Now that leaves an extra USB port free and I can always pair with my phone for internet on-the-go without having to worry about getting a WWAN card a...

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on Thinkpad X301?

I'm running Lucid (amd64) on my X61 and everything works great right out of the box. I had to look at ThinkWiki to get scrolling with the TrackPoint to work, but other than that, it's just install and go. EDIT: I should note that hibernate and suspend work fine and all of the hotkeys work right out ...

Re: Does Linux deserve the image of being too geeky?

I've been 100% Linux now for 3.5 years and never looked back. At work I (of course) have to use Windows but it doesn't really bother me all that much. Linux has come a LONG way since I first tried it out 10 years ago. Linux as a desktop OS still has a ways to go, but then again, no one learned Windo...

It's a large jump though from that to 1920x1200, that's a lot more data to drive.

Re: wireless adaptor on/off hotkeys?

Using Lenny on my X41, the hotkeys just work, no fiddling required. Take a look at acpid if you want to intercept the keystrokes since they don't generate real keyboard events, they are sent as acpi messages instead. You'll just a rule file with a regex to catch the events and then a shell script to...

Re: 4 G of RAM under 32bit Ubuntu

There shouldn't be any performance degradation using the bigmem kernel, though it's worth noting the following things: 1. The chipset has to be able to address more than 4Gb of memory. 2. The chipset should have a memory remap function available in BIOS. This allows you to reclaim the address space ...

Re: WiFi reception differs on Windows and Linux

My experience has been that linux wifi drivers handle power saving modes differently (which affect the actual signal strength). The percentage numbers that either side reports are largely fiction since the drivers don't take noise into account. You can get good signal even from far away if there's n...

It doesn't ever cost $50 to ship ANYTHING from China.
They charge for expensive shipping and then throw it on a boat for $2 and it gets to you 4-6 weeks later.
