These CF adapters are passive, they are just cards that remap the PATA pinout to CF I/O mode pins. So they are very little compatibility issues with branded or no-brand adapters. Apart from the fact that most CF adapters sold are not UDMA, and the large majority will not properly fit a X40 due to t...

Are you saying the good adapters are not made in China? Or your new Thinkpad is made somewhere else? No, that's not what we are saying: we are saying that good adapters and cards are from reputable brands. If you buy a "no-brand" adapter (probably made in Asia), and a no-brand memory card fr...

Ok thanks guys, so is this false advertising as a 133-300x? Might be close to 300x in read speed, in optimum conditions. However, it will probably be 133x in write speed. I keep reading from people on this forum asking about whether cheaper, lower specification cards will work as the main CF card f...

I can't imagine that a 233x card would be that much slower. I think this is expected, as some cards have a much slower write speed than read speed, and the speed quoted is the top one. This is why my recommendation was to go for a Transcend 300x, as the read and write speed are similar, and the exp...

It would be nice to have faster CF cards, but for certain application such as browser use, even a slow card will seem faster than HDD. I don't think modern browsers are saving all the assets of a web page to the file system before displaying them to you, so what you are talking about is anecdotal. ...

Even a 60x card will seem fast for browser use. This is because there are a high number of files in a typical web page. You can see this by saving a web page. The seek time in HDD give CF a huge advantage. Sorry, I am not sure to understand what you are saying. As far as I know, a 100x card is goin...

Just another piece of advice: you can sell the standard HD coming with the X40 for pretty much the same price as a quality 8GB CF, making the conversion very cheap (even if you loose some space in the process, performance would be much better). I bought a Transcend 300x 8GB card (working at least tw...

32GB CF cards are about $125 in the U.S. Looking at what's available on eBay, I think you would get something quite slow for that price (probably, 100x, or about 15MB/sec in read, and much slower in write). In that case, the memory card would probably be worse in performance than the standard HD. T...

Re: Report on CF conversion
Addonics adapter seems to be one of the best... But I keep on saying that the PACF18H is the only one wich is really designed for the IBM X40/41 and also supports UDMA. This adapter has the same size as the Hitachi 1.8 drive and fits perfectly. Sorry, I hadn't seen your comments about the PACF18H c...

Report on CF conversion
Hi, I am happy to report on the conversion of a X40 from the 40GB HD (Hitachi) to a CF card (Transcend 300x). Configuration: Windows XP SP3 NTFS (default block), no compression 512 Mb RAM BIOS (2.08 ) and Embedded Controller Program (1.62 ) Transcend 300x 8GB Addonics CF IDE adapter AD44MIDE2CF The ...

Re: Clarifications
I benchmarked both with the Transend and saw little or no difference. Hi, Thanks for providing some answers. Regarding NTFS vs. FAT32, did you use the default cluster size? Also, some people have claimed that NTFS with compression would perform faster (since less data to write), on top of being ben...

the first one and the fourth ones might work, the others don't look right. After reading a lot about compatible adapters, I came to the conclusion that only the Addonics one will work properly, as the IDE connector is placed differently from all the other adapters. On all the adapters sold on eBay,...

Clarifications
Hi, I have been reading this thread with much interest. I have some questions/clarifications so hopefully someone with experience will be able to answer. 1) CF IDE adapter I see that the addonics dual adapter is the clear choice for a X40. However, I can't find it in the UK (US online shops selling ...
