Re: now I know why the eSATA port is gone from the W530
EngineersCake, you won't get the equivalent of dual-link DVI bandwidth from USB 3.0 so, if that bandwidth will be useful to your work, then I'd think Thunderbolt is eventually the way to go. PC manufacturers like Lenovo are testing the waters with it right now. It's very similar to Displayport, but ...

Re: Screwdriver to access RAM
Just buy one of those inexpensive computer toolkits like this one and a wrist strap . There's no point buying tools one screwdriver at a time. And there's no point in stripping the soft-metal screws that Lenovo uses, just because you used the wrong-sized screwdriver. Don't tighten them too tight. Go...

I recommend that everyone vacuum (not blow) the dust out of all the vents on their machine as described below, once a year, or you can burn up your laptop. MSR_Steve, the areas you describe as being hot agree with the GPU overheating due to dust-clogged vents (the GPU produces more heat than the CPU...

Re: Version of Expresscard/34 /54
Expresscard is basically a way to plug an external card into your laptop's internal PCI-Express (i.e. PCIe) bus. The W701 uses Intel's QM57 chipset, which provides PCIe 2.0, and therefore the W701 supports Expresscard 2.0. And, as I said in the thread you link to: "ExpressCard 2.0 should have the sa...

Re: W700DS to W701DS upgrade
You could go with the 2800M, assuming there are no physical incompatibilities between that and the W700x's GPU heatsink, although it would be slightly less fun. Slightly faster than the Quadro FX 3700M from the W700, though, and surprisingly close to the 3800M. TDP for the 2800M is 75W, just like th...

Re: W701 worth upgrading to RGB LED backlit ?
I personally can't imagine having that laptop without a 1920x1200 display, which is what the RGB-LED-backlit display gives you. But that's a "wide-gamut" display, and you may not be happy with the distorted, neon-like, over-saturated colors which that display shows when viewing images in NON-color-m...

Re: Which hard drive/SSD combo for W700 and T60
Avoid XP64, it doesn't have the driver support that you need on the W700. I know experienced W700 users who have tried it, and it was bad news. The dual CCFL backlights on the W700 don't wear out any faster than any others, but if someone used a screensaver on that machine 24 hours a day for a year ...

Re: Which hard drive/SSD combo for W700 and T60
I'm surprised that whoever installed the SSD in the W700 didn't remove the turbo memory. Yes you'll probably want to remove it. Turbo memory was sort of a stopgap measure between hard drives and SSDs. It will cause a lot of extra activity for the SSD. My understanding is that Windows 7 has better su...

Re: How to calibrate the Thinkpad's LCD with dispcalGUI
So, in short, people should look for a panel with high Adobe RGB rating as that would indirectly imply a high sRGB rating as well. And that the Adobe RGB has a wider colour rage. Is that right? How do you like the new display compared to the original stock display?
Sager offers a no-dead-pixel guarantee as well, for a meager fee. Well worth it.
The W530 reportedly just got PTCRB certification, which is for GSM/UMTS equipped wireless devices, so it's coming.

Re: SDHC card reader doesn't work
Look in the Power Manager for energy saving settings that turn off the card reader. Do so in whatever power mode you're in when the problem occurs. You can change and then save those settings to avoid the need to wake the reader. You may additionally have a corruption problem with the card, which wo...

Re: W520 & RAID option - some questions
If it'll only work on Intel ssds then its not something to write home about. The TRIM support is being added to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver, so it's being added to the storage controller that's built into the computer, and isn't for a specific brand of drives. So TRIM should then work...

Re: W520 & RAID option - some questions
If you try to run SSD RAID, you'll run into the problem of TRIM support. Win 7 won't do TRIM on RAID. So you'll start off at 800mb read/write and quickly drop down to half of that in a few months of use. Kind pointless if you ask me. Kaze22, that's an interesting point. Here's some updated info: In...

We've seen before that we can't believe everything that these manufacturers say in their docs. Just one example is shown here , in which Intel's docs tell us that a family of CPUs can supposedly only support 2 SO-DIMMs, when in fact many manufacturers used 4 SO-DIMMs with them. Plus, as a wise man o...

Actually, in the NBR thread, lead_org is wrong about the T500/W500/W700 all using the same chipset, as they don't. The W700 uses a different Intel chipset which doesn't support switchable graphics (see this ). And, in contrast to what Tsunade Hime says, just because the computer-maker doesn't offici...

AMATX, are you using the latest BIOS release for the machine?
Not that I'm telling you to update, which has its own risks, but support for this type of thing is often BIOS-dependent. If you do update the BIOS, don't do so within Windows, but instead do it using the boot CD process.
