Re: Thinkpad 701c replacing or removing onboard memory

i had the same problem with my 701c, and when i looked closely at the planar, there was a resistor (or similar chip) that had broken away between the memory chips. As it was too small for me to solder, i had to buy another planar.

very poor timing. would have loved to buy it to go with my boxed 770 and 240. Good luck with the sale.

Re: can't get a Thinkpad 240 to boot from the external cdrom

if you have lost the operating system you will need to download the drivers for the cd-rom from Lenovo if they are still available. Then they will have to be extracted to a floppy disk. Then, assuming you still have the external floppy that came with the 240 as well, you can then use the cd-rom to r...

Re: 701c/701cs Cmos Battery?

it has been suggested to de-solder and remove the existing battery on the board, noing the +ve and -ve terminals and sldering on a cmos battery from a THINKPAD 600 or similar, by removing the connector and soldering the wires to the board. I have to say that this did absolutely nothing for me and it...

Re: 770Z DVD playback with DEVA card / Maximum hard drive size.

you may be pleased to hear that it's nothing to do with the P3 upgrade. If you can fire up the laptop without bios error messages all is well. The only time i got crazy problems like yours was when i tried to use a HDD that was too big on my 770 ( the original version) . I tried to be clever and use...

Re: 770Z DVD playback with DEVA card / Maximum hard drive size.

If the installation disks can't see the HDD, then you could try using the win 98 start up floppy (or similar) and use FDISK to erase the partitions it finds, and start again. This has ALWAYS worked for me in the past, although i can't understand why your instal disks don't find the HDD.

Re: 770Z DVD playback with DEVA card / Maximum hard drive size.

just to add to this a bit more. I have a PIII 750 in my 770 that naturally runs at 600mhz thanks to the speedstep issue. I have no issues at all watching DVDs on this laptop, using WINDVD 5. If i wanted to output a video signal i would have to use the standard video out port at the back of the lapto...

Re: 770Z DVD playback with DEVA card / Maximum hard drive size.

the graphics cards for the 770x and 770z already have mpeg capability built in, ( the previous models needed an auxilliary card that slotted in underneath the battery!) so a deva card isn't necessary. All you need for these two laptops is the software to play dvds. On XP all you need is windvd 5. Th...

Re: FS: IBM TransNote - FULLY LOADED - FULLY FUNCTIONAL!

i have a couple and i really wish they could make a modern day equivalent. You can even touch the screen with your finger and get good responses (as long as you don't want to be too precise...) i would use mine today if it wasn't for the fact that they both need batteries ( 1 lasts 20 minutes, the o...

Re: 701 find. eek. May need help

i wouldn't bother with Win 3.x, just go for 95. Mine is happily running 95 and every now and again i fire it up just to keep it happy. Sometimes i use the adaptor that came with my 701, ( the original) sometimes i use the one from my 770, depends which happens to be on hand at the time. Never had an...

Re: 701C Display Turns Off

i don't believe they are compatible, but i'm not 100% sure because there were 2 types that went into the 701c. You may be lucky by trying to re-seat the connectors for the panel, if you haven't tried this already. you could always put a WANTS AD in the marketplace because all the guys here have tons...

Re: 701C Display Turns Off

seems very likely that it is the inverter. At a certain angle, even with a faulty inverter, it can be possible to see something on the screen. better if it was in dos mode because you would have the contrast of black against white. Guess the solder could be faulty on the backlight connections too. C...

Re: 701c display problem

the bios really doesn't seem to have much bearing in the OS in my experience. My 701c would crash randomly, lose bios settings and sometimes have a funny display. when i inspected the board closely i saw the minute resistor was loose, the solder had worn. (changing bios batteries had no effect, obvi...

Re: 701c display problem

it's very likely that you damaged the mainboard when you replaced the battery. Assuming you soldered it correctly etc.. and used the little metal tubular spacers that keep the system board and the mainboard seperate. There are some very tiny resistors next to the built-in memory on the mainboard tha...

yes, i have usb devices coming out of my ears, but something i have never thought to buy is a usb -hdd adapter, and no doubt it would have to compatible with the 2.5" because naturally the one i have for a 3.5" doesn't do the trick. Re: 770x problems after CPU Upgrade

unfortunately, that type of processor is not compatible with the OLD 770X. You will need an MMC 2 type processor. These are available up to 400mhz in pentium 2, or 850 mhz in pentium 3( very rare) If you choose pentium 3 then there are problems with onboard cache compatibilty and you have to disable...
