I have a W520, and ever since I recieved it (ordered it CTO) the screen hinges have creaked really bad. When one attempts to move the screen forward or backward from an open position, the right hinge will pop before it is free and will move fine until it you stop moving the screen and move it again....

Are you connected to a GbE switch? Does the switch lose the link light as well?

If your server has an unused NIC port, it would be interesting to see if it would do it directly connected to the server. 1GbE should auto crossover.

It has been noted in several places that the 1.36 BIOS and newer limits the speed of the RAM in the W520. I just flashed to 1.35 and noticed the WEI score for RAM went from 7.6 to 7.8, so it apparently does make a slight difference in memory performance. Not sure if I will be able to tell the differ...

I've run into the Pagefile thing as well. Out of 160GB, the large Pagefile and particularly the hibernation file eats into the precious SSD space. I grabbed a W520 before they are gone to get the "normal" ThinkPad keyboard, and also got the 2960XM processor. From what I understand, there is no a huge difference in performance from the W530 and W520. If the keyboard change and lack of modem doesn't bother you, the W530 should be a good machine....

No - as long as you are on wired Ethernet and a GbE switch, you should be able to obtain 1GbE speeds.

FYI - Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008/R2 keys are not media specific. You may use any disc with any key (OEM, retail, upgrade, VL) and the software will "convert" to the version that corresponds witht the key.

It will run fine, but if you are a big Aero fan than pick a more modern machine for W7. The video driver defaults to VGA for the ATI7500 GPU in the T30.
