Re: Can't enter wifi-Password in a hotel or anywhere else?
Never had that issue in any hotel and would probably look askance at a solution that came from a unknown source like that.

Re: X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard
As a follow-up, I replaced the entire keyboard/palmrest with a eBay find, same model/FRU#. Works fine now, so somewhere in the old keyboard was the house of wonkiness. Got myself another nice running small laptop.

Re: Replacing motherboard - is exact match required?
As stated above, I did this with an E14 from Intel to AMD mobo. As long as all the ports line up in the case and ribbon cables. Yours should be simpler being AMD->AMD. I had to change a few other parts.

Re: X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard
I cleaned the ribbon connectors and sockets on motherboard with IPA, with no change. I did not access the connections under the motherboard. No change. The odd issue is that F1 works fine to access the BIOS during boot, but F10 does not while "in" BIOS. And then none of the number keys (and only the...

Re: X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard
I get this and a list of all the parts just like my other X1's.... The replacement mobo (this s/n shown) was "new" from a Chinese eBay seller. It did not show signs of installation. Popped it in, hooked it up and it fired up first time.

Re: X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard
Odd, because Vantage updates have worked fine. I even registered the unit on Lenovo's website and it recognizes the new serial # and system type (20FB) just fine.
Any thoughts on the keyboard issue? Odd that it affects just a single row of keys, and the entire row, not individual keys.

Thanks for that info, which I d/l'ed. But is it necessary for any reason? What does re-establishing the old serial number do for me that just using the new serial number doesn't?

Lenovo sells the "kits" for most of their products, but last I looked they were kinda spendy for what is basically foil tape. Kapton tape may be a resource in bulk if you cut your own.

X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard
Doing some work on resurrecting yet another X1 Carbon. This one is a 4th Gen i5 - 8GB model. The previous owner broke out completely the Wifi card socket (sheesh, some people). I had a new spare mobo, so installed that, ran all the updates (repeatedly) and it's working fine (almost). Here's the issu...

I have found that Google search is less accurate lately now with AI as it is entirely geared to sell you things and it doesn't care from where. I recently entered a direct website link into google and it took me somewhere else that it thought had "better deals" and those were scam sites also.

Re: Docks -- 40AS and Lenovo E14 Gen 2 series
I recall a post somewhere on disabling security in BIOS when using docks or somesuch, but this device has no "dock" anything in BIOS, so that can't be done. The USB-C port is iffy (very tender to movement) considering that it is a brand new mobo, but it does work to charge and will work with a USB-C...

Re: More Thinkpad hardware failures - power bricks
I have multiple "spare" power bricks and grab them at yard sales or thrift store when available (and cheap). But none of mine ever get plugged in without a substantial surge suppressor/UPS unless the rare times in a hotel room. Since I ain't so smart, it pays to be smart.

Re: Docks -- 40AS and Lenovo E14 Gen 2 series
So far this AMD-based E-14 doesn't communicate with any of the docks that I own (quite a small collection, thank you Lenovo). And I misspoke, I just tried again and the unit is not communicating with the dock at all, but it is listed as the right dock on the OCM. What I do not have is the OAEM USB-C...

Docks -- 40AS and Lenovo E14 Gen 2 series
Okay, After the rebuild on my Gen 2 E-14 from an Intel-based to an AMD-based unit I got caught up in the dock chase. Finding the dock that would allow me to use either E-14 without changing docks all the time led me to the 40AS series. The 2019-2020 OCM says this should work for either unit. I belie...

Re: Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 Resurrection
Well in the end it's all wrapped up. I dare say it is not Lenovo's best of form to use virtually identical connectors with "essentially" (to the naked eye) the same pin-out connector for a system that will short a component immediately. But "thanks all" for all the help here. Onto the next project.....

Odd, because the connector is the same size on each panel. I read somewhere that the 40-pin connector was silver and the 30-pin connectors were this copper-colored.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Fri Oct 03, 2025 3:15 pmI count the solder joints on the connector in your photo and got 40.

Right, gotcha on that front. But .... Lenovo lists the original screen 5D11B64637 (N140HCN-EA1) by the same p/n as "touch" but this is a 30-pin connector? Re: t490s do you put thermal paste od the secon chip CPU?
I'd admit when I did my T490 I "did" put it on the second smaller chip, and it truly made no difference. I did it because the heat shield extends over that chip, so there must be some thermal considerations.

Actually I think there are some crossed wires here, or overly-quick reactions. Recall that I have two screens. Before you helped me pinpoint the F1 LCD backlight fuse as the issue, I was assuming that the original screen backlight was out, so I procured a (used) replacement screen assembly. The orig...

UPDATE Okay, had a repair shop replace fuse F1. Three times. Everytime the screen was hooked up, it blew the fuse again.
