Help me catch up on the current state of the market. (Workstations)

#1 Post by Quardah » Thu Oct 28, 2021 3:19 pm

Hello all.

I will try to keep it short. I have been running a T540p for a while now and Lenovo parted ways with its logical naming scheme and i am completely lost. I am planning on upgrading because i got a new job and they will fund half of the laptop, so i am planning on getting something big. I can wait for the next release.

I am planning on going larger; i am currently using the T540p which is 15.6" but i am absolutely going for the 17.3" next. (The T540p will become a home server and backup laptop)

It seems like Lenovo went with the P letter for workstations but there are several models like P72 or P17 Gen2. They have generations now?

Is there a rumor for when the next release is coming? I am looking mostly for an AMD with good Integrated graphics 17.3inch ThinkPad with a 4K screen. Hopefully the trackpad has 2 sets of buttons (very important) like the T420. I know P72 has two sets of buttons but P17 doesn't -_- Are the trackpad interchangeable like on T540p using T450 trackpad with physical buttons?

I would rather have an AMD device because i run Linux and AMD has better integrated than intel. Dedicated can work too as i have grown used to it but only integrated works best and would probably be much less expensive. I am also mostly running several video-demanding software at the same time so a good integrated would be a much better approach to my workflow, as i tend not to spawn applications on the secondary GPU.

As i am typing this, the lack of bottom physical button below the trackpad on P17 is somewhat a dealbreaker. Can i get a P73 with an AMD processor or it doesn't exist?

Please let me know what you think. Looking forward to seeing your replies.

Cheers!

Why not consider a smaller laptop with a nice ~24" IPS monitor?
Something like this P14s Gen2?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

The laptop that you posted has the internals that i am looking for. (but doesn't have two sets of mouse buttons).

I am specifically looking for a 17 inch because it fits best for my workflow. The laptop will be docked most the time with externals, so a larger screen fits best.

I will also be using it undocked but much less often and i won't have to move it very far. Larger screen fits best for presentations too. The weight and lower battery life doesn't really bother me.

Larger workstations are also more easily serviceable in my experience and i am planning on using this next laptop for at least the next decade.

It's a little unfortunate, it seems no P series have AMD processors. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I can work with Intel but i'm pretty certain AMD integrated would fit my needs better than Intel + Nvidia.
