Hi, I'm new here and this is my first post. I'm asking a question for a friend, and I guess he could get his own account, but probably won't ever be using it that much. So here's the situation. My friend and I both purchased T430 laptops for university. They were custom orders and we got them in August 2013. I believe it's the T430-2342. Unfortunately after about three weeks, his got frozen on the Windows boot screen where the Windows 7 squares would load up into the Windows logo. I actually had a similar issue with my laptop freezing at the desktop screen and would sometimes experience a short lag when closing a window. I restored my Windows 7 OS to factory settings with the restore feature in the boot menu and it seems to be working fine now.
As for my friend, the technology center at his university installed a new copy of Windows 7 from a disc. But then it would freeze when trying to close a window or opening windows explorer. He keeps getting a blue screen that says kernel_datainpage_error after the Check Disk feature freezes at around 10%-11% after several hours of running it.
He used the Lenovo backup feature and created 4 CDs with the image file on them, so is he still able to use that without the Lenovo Recovery partition?
Is this a hard drive issue that needs to be sent into Lenovo or are there any other options available to get rid of this freezing?
Thanks to anyone who helps to answer this question and Happy Thanksgiving next week.

ThinkPad T430 freezing question
Re: ThinkPad T430 freezing question
Download linux live cd/dvd (ie. Ubuntu) and run it on that computer. Use it in a live mode long enough and see for yourself whether the pc freezes or not. If not, it's a disk failure, if it does, something else is at fault.
My T430 with GTX 560 Ti (Now with GTX 670)
T430: i5-3320m, 8 GB, SSD + HDD, 1600x900.

Re: ThinkPad T430 freezing question
Welcome to the forum.
I'd say that the installation by your University folks is causing the problem.
I also bet that most required drivers are missing.
If that machine is still under warranty, I'd send it in for e new HD/SSD.
In any case I'd request a set of T430 recovery disks from Lenovo and freshly install from there.
Your uni probably requires additional programs such as campus-approved/supplied Antivirus and a campus-wifi setup.
Possibly also get a free/sponsored campus-MS Office.
I can run anything from a T60/R60/X60 onwards with a W7-Pro Recovery Set belonging to a T410 (ancestor of your T430).
No problems anywhere, but my 'newest' machine is only a T410. No crappy 16:9 machines in this household!
Here on the Forum we do not even consider the T430 a real Thinkpad anymore, due to things such as a lousy keyboard.

Re: ThinkPad T430 freezing question
Alright, thanks for helping out. My friend is just going to go with the option of having it be repaired under Lenovo warranty. It'd be the best option since I'm pretty sure he had all the drivers reinstalled, but he didn't want to take any chances with messing around. Anyhow, his Lenovo is already in the box; it's just a matter of seeing how long it will take to get it repaired since this week happens to be American Thanksgiving.
Thanks,
