With reference to this article: Lenovo Rants: Battery and Dock Flaws, and scrolling through the Docks, Port Replicator, Ultrabase - Reference Guide it seems to be a recurring design flaw for compatible laptops with an air vent/ventilation exhaust located in the top left corner.

If you don't need high-performance video output, you can use the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock. Since it connects via a USB 3.0 cable, it doesn't block the vents.
For newer models, USB-C docks are available too.
