How much is too much? - Battery self-discharge

#1 Post by mikemex » Sun Feb 18, 2024 9:11 pm

Hey,

The first time this thing happened to me, it was with my P14s G1, which was the first "modern" machine I had in a while. Even when I turned it off, it would self discharge slowly over time, to the point that the next time I turned it on (say, after a week of not using it) it would be completely, or nearly completely, empty.

At the time a lot of people were complaining about the issue and everyone blamed AMD for that. But exactly the same thing is happening now to my X1C9: I didn't use it for a week and now it had self-discharged to 6-7%. This can't be normal.

Back in the day, I don't remember if it was the T420, T430 or both, had some function that kept the machine in stand by instead of fully off, so you could turn it on by just swiping the finger. If you disabled that function, then the machine could be stored for long periods, barely discharging itself.

Now, I've seen a variant of that behavior in new machines: when you open the lid, the machine detects it and it instantly turns on. So I'm wondering: could that be the reason for the high self-discharge rates? How do we control that behavior?

For the sake of ecology I donated all my classic Thinkpads.

That's Micro$haft for you, Windows 11 "fast startup".
Should be renamed: fast destruct.
But luckily it appears that you can disable it.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
