Thinkpad on screen volume control

i imagine most newer thinkpads are the same- when you push the up, down or mute button on the keyboard, it appears in green writing on the bottom of the screen- i was turning stuff off in msconfig, and i just noticed the volume on screen isnt showing up. does anyone know what process i need to reenable?

Hi,

Not sure what you disabled in msconfig but the process that runs onscreen display is TPONSCR.exe if you look in task manager.

Under the Services tab in MSCONFIG did you uncheck the ThinkPad PM Service?

I'm guessing PM may stand for Package Manager since there is an instance of tponscr.exe under a directory named C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY

In my day job I'm a computer programmer. I've learned good habit to get into when making configuration changes such as msconfig is document what the settings are before and after you make them. That way if something stops working you can probably get it back to the way it was.

Of course I don't always practice what I preach

I'm pretty sure it's an ATI video driver that you've prevented at startup.
My guess is "ati2evxx.exe" on my T42.


If you have a normal Thinkpad, right-click desktop, [Properties]>>[Settings]>>[Advanced]

Click on the [On-Screen-Display] and you will see that ATI does generate these on-screen green Volume graphics (among other things).

ati2evxx.exe does sound like one i disabled- i will check- i appreciate the info.

tphkmgr is the process that runs the onscreen volume/brightness levels.
