For those having troubles with their backlight, check the thread: LCD CCFL Backlight Repair/Replacement - I'll fix it for you! - I'd certainly consider this offer, if I ever encouter this problem, compared to start messing with it on my own (because I haven't tried it, and because I would therefore be afraid of damaging something!).

Since I paid via AMEX and the T42 had a 3 year factory warranty, AMEX is covering the repair (in year 4).

IBM ezserv has the unit now, quoted $575.00 and is repairing. AMEX authorized the repair that includes the replacement of the LCD assemby.

I was not looking forward to replacing the lamp myself
