Technical difficultywith my USB mouse. Any help?

Occasionally the mouse will go haywire. It will just start to automatically scroll the screen up non-stop. This is not a problem with the mouse as when this happens and I switch to a different mouse in either usb slot the same thing happens. It goes back to normal if I restart.
Thinkpad R51 -- 1.8ghz Dothan, 512 mb ram, 7200 rpm 60 gb HD, 32mb Radeon, XP Pro, 15" XGA, mediocre display
