It designates the sub-models. For instance, all the 380 Series were 2635s, the one I have coming is a 2635-FAU. All the Exx and Fxx were PIIs, but the Fxx were PII/266 were as the Exx were PII/233.
On some long-running models like the T20s, even the 1st four digits change to reflect a relatively major change that you probably wouldn't see on the outside of the machine.
