Keystroke/Typing Delay

#1 Post by Ken Fox » Wed Feb 21, 2007 1:29 pm

I've recently been using my Z61T for writing MS Word documents, emails, and for filling in some web forms. I've noticed some significant keystroke delays, where what I type appears in the application only seconds later. It is obviously going into some sort of buffer for reasons unknown.

I ran MSCONFIG and have stopped a lot of bloatware apps from starting up with Windows XP, yet a quick check after doing so shows that the keystroke delay continues. Just to note, the Synaptics pad had previously been disabled (as I prefer the stick), and I've disabled loading of the synaptics drivers in the MSCONFIG startup menu.

Obviously I have missed something. What could be causing this and what should I try next? I haven't noticed this on any of my other thinkpads or my desktop. The other new Thinkpads I own (T43, X60) do not appear to have this issue.

In most desktop BIOSes there is the 'Typematic' adjustable delay/rate, which has default 250msec.
You can also adjust the typematic delay in Windoze, under the keyboard section of the control panel. Check the settings there.
Modern (external) keyboards have it also sometimes built-in.
Linux has a 'kbdrate' program for that.
You could try and update/reinstall the keyboard drivers.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!
