Hello,
I purchased a Thinkpad R60e in February. The computer shipped with Windows Vista and used to run perfectly cool and quiet.
After a month I decided to get rid of Vista, which I found too slow and bloated.
Since Windows 2000 wouldn't run on my core duo correctly, I installed Windows XP.
Now, I experience some problems. First of all, the fan turns on a few minutes after I start the computer and keeps running all the time.
I downloaded the Thinkpad fan control utility, which reported me than the fan keeps running because the CPU is hot (45c).
Actually the problem is that my core duo always run at maximum speed, thus keeping the fan on.
In the BIOS, I changed the AC power settings from Performance to Balanced, downloaded the power management utility and set the it to "Quiet and cool - low performance" - no success, my core duo will still run at its maximum speed (according to CPUinfo).
On Windows Vista, the fan would turn on a few seconds every minute or so, which was a lot better.
Does anybody experienced the same problem on Windows XP?
Any insight would be appreciated,
Thank you for your time,
Sub

Core duo always at full speed on WinXP
First of all, make sure you have installed the Intel Chipset drivers and the Power Management drivers. If you still have a problem, perhaps the following hotfix from Microsoft will help.
Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad R60e

That solved my problem, thank you very much!
The chipset driver was installed but for some reason the device manager reported it as faulty (exclamation mark next to it). I reinstalled the driver, rebooted, and everything is now working like it was with Vista (actually smoother and faster).
I also installed the hotfix, I would say the UI and the general responsiveness is a little snappier now.
Thank you again
