Need help finding the right Winxp pro reinstall CD

#1 Post by kiehn2u » Fri Aug 31, 2007 10:41 am

Here how the problem started, my daughter has a IMB 2001 Thinkpad with winxp pro. She added her roommate on with
limited access and her aministrator sign on disappeared. Someone told her if she hit alt clear del twice it would bring the real sign on screen up, she could sign on then delete her roommate and her hiden admistrator would show back up. She tried this but never had a password for her aministrator so it wouldnt let her sign in to delete her room mate.

So she figured she would just reinstall winxp pro however she
never got any cd disks with her system. So she borrowed a winxp
pro installation cd from a friend but her ibm computer refused it
saying the copy of winxp pro was older then the one on her
system. I hope that wasnt to confusing.

How can she find the right winxp pro installation cd for her 2001
IBM thinkpad. If I was to search on ebay what would I know to look for??? Thanks Sue

You mean it's a Thinkpad made in 2001? What's its 7-character product number? It's printed on the bottom of the laptop and should be in this format: ####-###
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (FHD+, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (FHD+, 2.00lb);
HP Z440 (Xeon E5-1630 v3); Dell OptiPlex 5040 SFF (Core i5-6600), OptiPlex XE2 (Core i7-4770S)
Acer ET322QK, T272HUL; Crossover 404K; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

You need to wipe the drive clean if you want to use that version of XP, also you won't be able to use the product key on the machine for that install you'll need to either purchase a key from MS or buy your own. If you call lenovo and tell them your situation you can probably purchase a set of recovery CD's to bring your system back to factory configuration. If there is no other problems with the machine I'd try to fix the current problem before reinstalling.

If she has a legitamate admin account boot into safe mode and you should be able to log on as the administrator and delete the other account.
