Hello,
I have been reading here awhile and use the search option a bunch to find answers to questions. But I am having trouble finding the answer I am looking for on this question and wondered if anyone may be able to help.
I have a t42 2373-M1U with the Radon 9600 video and a 1.8 proc. I run Linux and use a temp monitor tool gkrellm an average temp for me is 42C CPU 46-48C GPU. Running glxgears, a resource intensive task, pushes the CPU and GPU. After 30+min my temps clime to 62-70C CPU and 80-82C GPU. My only fear/question is wether or not the temp on the GPU is going to high, am I heading for a break down at some point? From the heat sink design it seems that the GPU will probably always be hotter than the CPU. I have cleaned and applied Artic Silver 5 to both the GPU/CPU this dropped the CPU temp, but had little effect on the GPU temp (CPU/GPU used to be almost the same temp before). Just looking for some assurance that this will be fine.

Mobile CPU and GPU support more then 90°C in operation. So, you don't have to wory about.

I am monitoring my t43p with the Centrino Hardware Control, and I noticed that the CPU temperature sometimes changes within minutes from over 70 C to 45C or so. This seems like a rather large change. I understand that the CPU is rated for high temperatures, but rapid changes of temperature cannot possibly be good for electronics. Should I worry?
In addition, the temperature usually is not brought down by the fan, but by me shutting off a few programs, like Thunderbird or Opera. Why can't the fan cope with these high temperatures? Is this normal?

Very true, but the user doesn't support that much... high temps on a laptop are not only annoying (loud fan, uncomfortable) but can be a hazard to the user... some evidence shows laptops can lower the sperm count in men because of the temp, and the proximity to the testicles (that's right, I used the t word!).

I'm suspecting some of the excess heat has caused some of these cases where laptop batteries overheated and ignited. Most are just cheap 3rd party batteries though.

It is after all a "laptop"! If I wanted a desktop replacement I would not have purchased a T42 series!! and wait for a flight at the airport...unless you get business/first class(lounge with free WiFi); you have little if any room to prop a laptop on.

AND

who said it is a "bad thing" to lower sperm count - (The less available the less the...well, you get the point!)- UNLESS it is a PERMANENT thing!!

I did some tests on my 2379-DXU also with Radeon mobility 9600. It's around 28 deg C in this room now, but: GPU at Idle: 50 deg C, after trying the NextGen Farcry tech demo originally optimized for X850 desktop cards, the temperature of the GPU peaked at 89 deg c, and the fan entered the highest RPM mode.

The GPU temperature will always peak, as you can only get a certain amount of flops from it... unless you overclock which is not recommended unless you live at the South Pole. There were no artifacts of any kind at 89 deg., so i don't think you should worry at all.

Let's just say that the move to the T6x design was crucial for the never GPUs... an X1400 would most likely overheat very fast with the M10 T4x fan and heatsink.

Thanks for the info! I am glad to get some more feedback because I had no real base numbers to go by. I love this laptop, funny thing is that in some ways it gives my desktop a run for it's money for some of what I do

, I don't do much gaming just a bunch of virtual PC work would have loved a duo but this 1.8 holds up very nice and the price was right!
