SUCCESS!! I did the GPU reflow on my T42p
I'm typing on it now. I was about to give this machine up for dead until directed to the GPU reflow instructions in the sticky on the top of this page. So I took about 3 hours this afternoon to tear it apart according to visionviper's instructions. I did end up with an extra screw at the end of the process. Oops. But it's working just fine.
Thanks everyone. Saves me the purchase price of a new laptop.

Hallo,
I had an issue with my T42p and was wandering if this the same problem for the GPU. Basically, I have the ThinkPad beeping on startup and no signal come to the monitor: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=69678
Which is the italian translation of "heat gun"? I don't really know what is the tool...
Thanks for any hint.
Cec

Even though I now have a T60, I would like to congratulate the OP on his success!
I hope your machine continues to serve you well. I love my Thinkpad and could only image the despair if I had a bad GPU.

Just an italian addendum:
termosoffiatore... isn't it just what we call "phon"?
(the italian name originating from the warm wind real existing somewhere in the world)?
i.e. aren't we basically speaking about hair-drier?
or this is a more powerfull and techinical version?
And I am wondering, why this kind of problem went fixed once you "dry" the MB? Is it something related to plastic part becoming harder?

Hello,
the "termosoffiatore" is really enhanced version of our phon. It spits hot air, in fact, but it can reach 600° temperature and can be controlled. I found a couple of them in some electricity/tool shops.
Here we are not drying the MB but actually reflowing the connection. In the guide in the sticky it's written that you need to warm it up to 205°.

Reflow stands for melting down (a little bit) the tin on the GPU contacts so it can "glue" the GPU pins back to the motherboard. Modern devices do not use the components which are soldered on the opposite side of board (going through the board) but flat/surface mounted components (SMD).
