Checklist for new T42 needed
Checklist for new T42 needed
I just received notification that the 2378FVU I ordered has shipped. Once it gets here, what do I need to check out within the initial 30 day period to make sure everything is suitable? I vaguely remember reading something on this forum about various keyboard and battery issues.
Off the top of my head...
How about running the IBM/Hitachi drive test utility on it? If you get a sector read error - that's bad. I wouldn't even try doing a repair - send it back.
The IBM Diagnostics "PC Doctor" - this would find any "gross" hardware errors.
Check the Windows system logs - make sure there are no unexplained errors (check for ANY atapi/disk errors - bad sign).
Make sure the BIOS/Embedded controller are up to date.
Check the system physically for any defects, expecially the display for any stuck on or stuff off pixels (although I RARELY see a bad pixel in an IBM laptop).
IBM no longer ships the recovery CDs with machines right? If it were me, I'd try to see if IBM would give me a recovery CD just in case.

Check each of the ports - you may not otherwise discover defects in the ones you rarely use.
Try reading and burning each media type supported if you have a chance - CD-R, RW, and DVD-R, RW (if you have multiburner). I've had a drive that could write DVD-RWs but not DVD-Rs, wouldn't read retail DVDs but wrote to CD-RWs, etc.
