T43p keyboard half dead

#1 Post by venik » Fri Oct 21, 2011 10:54 pm

After several years of loyal service, part of my t43p keyboard died-- no M, V, , etc.
If I turn it off and wait, it sometimes recovers when I reboot, but not always.
It sounds like a heating problem, but what might it be?
Is there anything I can do? I would hate to lose it if it can be revived.
Thanks

I would doubt that it has anything to do with heat...

a) Try another keyboard

b) Are your USB ports working properly at 2.0 at all times?

Good luck.

Or try reseating the connector 2-3 times.
It might have come loose after so many years.

I guess you mean: open it up to check for loose connection-- something I have been reluctant to do. The machine is on my night table, and is never moved, but it does get VERY hot (>85 deg. C) in normal or even light use...

Remove the keyboard (3 screws on a 15", 4 screws on a 14.1"), get a can of compressed air, put a toothpick or similar in the fan to stop it from turning, then use the spraycan to blow out the dust bunnies from the fan.
Put the keyboard back on.
You should be good to go again.

I did remove the kb and vaccumed whatever I could. The result is that now other letters are dead, mostly at the bottom of the kb and the ENTER key.... I guess it is time for the compressed air (I had not tried that yet).I saw no dust around, but I am sure there is a lot of it inside-- I live in NYC.
