T440p - Is This The Stock Heatsink or An Upgraded Heatsink..

#1 Post by Barkermush » Fri Jul 25, 2025 10:47 am

I purchased a Thinkpad T440p this week, and I have to say.. I love it! It's such a comfy/nice small machine.

Anyway, I purchased a T440p that came with an i7-4940mx.
Yes, I was wary that this thing would run too hot for the T440p's cooling system/chassis design. But it came with a GT730, upgraded screen, backlit keypad, 16gb ram/480gb ssd.. but most importantly it said it comes with an upgraded heat-sink to help with temps.

After installing all of Windows 10 updates, and installing all of the Lenovo drivers.. I installed HWInfo to monitor the temps.
While I was just browsing the web(firefox) and watching YouTube, I noticed it was constantly thermal throttling. Core Thermal Throttling and Package/Ring Thermal Throttling in the Sensors monitor were regularly hitting max temp (92)

So I used throttle-stop to undervolt it (I'm very basic with undervolting) so I did just a basic undervolt. -59.6 for the CPU Core, -59.6 for the CPU P Cache and -29.3 for the Intel GPU.
But it was still thermal throttling when browsing the web, so I decided to open it up and see if the fan/heatsink needed a clean and some new thermal paste.

Upon opening it up I see this heat-sink:

Isn't that just the default heat-sink that comes with all of the NVIDIA versions of the T440p? I'd watched some tear down videos of the T440p before my laptop came, and the heat-sinks on the GT730 versions looked the same on these tear down videos. Am I assuming wrong and it is an upgraded heat-sink? I thought there's no better place to ask than here, plenty of Thinkpad experts.

Looks like the standard dGPU fan.
There never was an 'upgraded' dGPU fan.
For that price of £200, return it for a refund!
You've been ripped off.
I bought my used T440p (FHD, 8GB, iGPU) in 2018(!) for $123.-
Spent $55 for an i7-4702MQ and a dGPU fan.
Been running like a champ ever since.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!
