Some help with respect to X60s
Hi all,
I live in Denmark and is about to buy a new, light, small laptop. I need a small laptop with good battery time since I travel a lot and my favorite after quite a lot of searching is the X60s. 8hrs on the battery at 1.6 kg approximately, combined with the strong chassis of the Lenovo is something I like.
But I have a few Q's you peeps might be able to help me with:
After reading a few posts here (and the very detail Lenovo pdf) I can understand that the 1702 and 1704 models are different in minor things, such as some have the UL-display and some are shipped with different WLAN/BT combos. Also, some minor weight differences. But is that all? For me, if it weighs 1.3, 1.6 or 1.9 kg doesn't really matter that much. I would love it to be as light as possible but I've had heavier laptops before and this has not been an issue. So, should I care if I get an 1702 or a 1704?
So, based on the combos I can find for sale cheap here in Denmark, I have found an 1702 with the 1.66GHz Core Duo and the 8-cell battery for a good price (approx. £ 1000) with VAT.
I can understand that the 945GM chipset and the PGA-arrangement in the laptops mobo enables med to swap to a Core 2 Duo cpu later. Any experience with this?
Any recommendations and comments much appreicated!

I believe you should buy what suites you most in terms of available hardware and software. I believe some people are too picky about the weight of their X60(s).
You will be happy with an X60(s), if you want something very lite. Best of luck deciding! 8 hour battery life is fantastic, as well!

Don't worry on 1702 or 1704 but pay attention to specs of individual models. Also, take the warranty period into account. Some models come with 1 year while most come with 3 years.delanvital wrote:So, should I care if I get an 1702 or a 1704?

The cpu on X60 series is soldered directly onto the motherboard and cannot be swapped.
Bluetooth and HSDPA are difficult to add after purchase, while RAM and Hard drive are very easy. These considerations can make a difference in your decision.

Thank you for your responses!
I am so fortunate that Danish law stipulates a 2 year production warranty when selling b2c for all products sold, for the shop to uphold. But I am so fortunate that all the models I am looking at have the 3yr guarantee. So for the first two years it is easier for me to just use the shop warranty.
I will stick to the £1000 model I found previously, this one for those who cares, just ignore the Danish stuff: http://www.edbpriser.dk/Products/Listpr ... ?ID=251629
Only downside I can see is the lack of a fingerprint reader-thingie and bluetooth. I don't use bt much and if I later do, I think a cheap dongle can remedy that. And this one is one of the few models available to me here that ships with the 8-cell battery. And, still, 1.6kg is fine by me (I am used to 2.8 so...)

Re: Some help with respect to X60s
Considering that there are no internal HSDPA cards available today (and maybe not even with the next ThinkPad update), HSDPA is just as easy to add afterward -- just plug in a CardBus card.sugo wrote:Bluetooth and HSDPA are difficult to add after purchase, while RAM and Hard drive are very easy. Actually, thinkpads in Europe have the built in Vodafone HSDPA card option (Sierra Wireless MC8755), similar to built in Verizon EV-DO in US X60/s.tomh009 wrote:Considering that there are no internal HSDPA cards available today (and maybe not even with the next ThinkPad update), HSDPA is just as easy to add afterward -- just plug in a CardBus card.
US T60/p and X60t also have built in Cingular (at&t) HSDPA option (Sierra Wireless MC8765).
Since X60/s only has one pc card slot, some people may prefer leave it open for future add on.

I stand corrected!
Still, with wireless, Ethernet, Bluetooth and modems built in, and USB2 more than usable for hard disks and memory card readers, PC Card slots are staying empty much more than they used to be 5-10 years ago. So unless you anticipate needing the slot, using it for HSDPA is not so bad ...
