There are any improvmkents going fromo 2GB to 3GB of RAM ?

Currently I have 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB Modules), and I use a lot of VMWare virtual machines, so I need a lot of RAM, somebody has any experience installing 3GB RAM (1 x 1GB + 1 x 2GB Modules) ?, the performance will be decreased ?, it is possible to install 4GB RAM in the X60 ?, thanks
