HV150UX2-100 on a W500

#1 Post by PhoenixR » Thu Jun 19, 2025 10:24 am

I just wondered is there any way to mount HV150UX2-100 on a W500, any clues? :?:

Short answer: no

Long answer:

W500 is an evolution of the 15.4” case style, there’s no reasonable way to fit 15” in it.

What has been done is someone put a W500/T500 board in a T60 15” decades ago and did a lot of creative mods to put it together. Other folks have had more success putting R500 boards in R60 15”. Lcdfans / the Chinese have made limited runs of “T700” boards for T60 15” and these are for sale from time to time.

Ultimately the cheapest way to enjoy a 15” screen is in a 15” laptop, best just get a T60 or R60 and call it a day.

If I recall correctly there was a member here who put a 4:3 SXGA+ screen into a R500. They accomplished this by modifying the top of LCD housing so that the screen stuck out the top of the R500, which I'm guessing had a negative impact on portability,

If you're looking for a better screen at a lower cost, something like the T580 with a 4k LCD is now seven years old and likely selling for a lot less than when new. A T580 offers other advantages as well like the low watt quad core has longer battery life and more oomph. The 4k LCD would own an old Flexview in terms of color, accuracy and brightness. Plus being LED there's no bulb to dim over time.

I've definitely seen a picture of I think a 15.4" T61 with a 15" T60 lid on it, it seemed like the hinge slots just seemed to line up very well, but it was definitely cursed... Would be a funny looking laptop though.

Dunno about T-series but done that in R-series chassis :P

I cave made a copy of what el-sahef has prepared some years ago so this was not my idea.

And this was my idea :P

Both still fully operational after all these years ;) and T61p in R61 was actually way, way easier to make.

when my r61 15”’s board broke i did swap in a 15.4” T61 board from a water damaged T61, nice way to make something out of two derelicts. unfortunately it made importing the rare and expensive r61 15” pointless because i could have just put a 15.4” T61 board in a R60 and had the same thing.

i also once put a R61 15.4” board in a T60 15.4” to replace a bios-locked motherboard. i only had to modify one corner of the chassis to make things fit. but at least i got a working laptop out of the deal.

the 15.4” boards are really just wider versions of the 4:3 boards, port-alterations notwithstanding.

i put a T500 board and an R500 board in a Z60m once. that was funny but in the end not worth it. if i was doing it again id use a T61 or R61 board.

It won't fit, the screen height exceeds the lid height. The normal solution to this would be to transplant the W500 motherboard into a 15.0" T60 or R60.
It has been done, once only, by hope on the Chinese forum 51nb. I think he called it a T62, if you want to seach for it. One big problem is that the video cable connector doesn't line up correctly, iirc. No one else has done this and lived to tell the tale.

I tried to achieve what you did on the left but could not see how to do it without weakening the shell. You've used part of the plastic shell from the R500 between the expresscard cage and the VGA connector. I can see where you've spliced it on the cage side (anybody who doesn't know these machines wouldn't be able to tell) but I can't see how you've done it at the bottom. How did you do this? Not wanting to weaken the shell I decided to use the R500 shell as a veneer in that region but that sub project dropped down the priority order.
First device I just cut the part of plastics from R400 and transplanted it ^^ Will post some pictures; this was actually the easiest part really :)
Still very interested ... :)
Probably best if you post the pictures in that thread if and when you do.

I am in agreement, the cheapest way is to get a T60 and call it a day, I have a T60p and the only question is - will it fit? Cause I heard that for T60p the original screen was HV150UX1-100 actually. So what's the difference between UX2 & UX1 then?

UX1 = CCFL backlight.
UX2 = LED backlight, 180 degrees reversed LCD-connector pinout, additional 14-pin connector for power.

I see, so how difficult is it to install a UX2 into T60p then given the additional power connector and 180 degrees reversed LCD-connector pinout - what does it take?

A lot has been written, also on this Forum, about my world-famous LED-mods and I had my own website as well, describing most of the how-to.
But due to my advanced age (80) I have given up doing them and the website has been closed down.
A very long story can be read here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=40808
And another, shorter one here: viewtopic.php?t=117175

i have come to appreciate the softer glow of ccfls. the tubes aren’t hard to replace when they eventually die. and at the end of the day it just works.

I read the shorter one carefully but couldn't force it to sift through 15 pages of the very long story. From what I understood it takes to change the connector of the LCD-cable (solder it off, switch the side and solder it back on). But there is no info on how to modify the inverter to connect to the LED backlight (just a brief mentioning, apart from removing the transformer) - so in brief how exactly should the inverter be modified?

I've tried modding a W500 to fit on a T60 chassis and gave up.
There are a lot of ports that do not fit with the exterior case, you'd have to cut.
Then you got all the screws that mobo & case don't align to...
Which then don't align with the palmrest, and ofc the DVD bay taken up as well.

But the main thing is that the W500 LCD cable is shorter than the T60 one.
I forget if I was just able to connect it straight to a UXGA screen, which made me want to do the mod.
It's best to just mod a 4:3 T61 onto a T60 chassis, or use an old machine.

I eventually bought a used Google Pixel and had been happy with their 3:2 display, and just dealt with a non 7 row keyboard.
Had a Pixel 2 for a bit, and owned a Pixelbook since release.
Coffee, F1, ThinkPads & Nikon.

Daily: PixelBook, W550s, MSI Raider GE78
Old Faves: A31p, 2521, 755CV, S31, 380Z.

The W/T500 planar in T60 frankenpad is notoriously difficult -- it's been done by hope on 51nb and documented there, but no one has been able to repeat it.
What a few of us have done is use a R500 planar in a R60/1 or a 15.4" T61p planar in a T60. In the first case the problem then reduces to finding a planar with discrete graphics and you get to use the 500 series CPUs; in the second the problem reduces to finding a planar without the defective nvidia graphics chip -- it has double the video RAM of the 14.1" T61p planar.
