IBM ThinkPad z61m 4 cycles of 4 beeps.

#1 Post by Vasyu_06 » Mon Jan 19, 2026 2:07 am

Hello, I have an old thinkpad(z61m), that has worked before, that beeps 4x4 times. The main battery is dead. In the manual I found out that it is a system board(security chip) issue. The cmos battery - CR2032-BV1(LF) is also dead(o.o3v). It has 2x1gb ram configuration. How do i start with troubleshooting?

Welcome to the Forum.

Begin with replacing the CMOS battery.

Thanks!
Can I solder the 2 wires to a normal cr2032 battery and replace the original one? In asking because locally cmos batteries with wires are extremely expensive.

NO SOLDERING!

This will help: https://writerit.nl/hardware/cmos/repla ... batteries/

That website says: Now wiggle the connectors until the metal breaks...
Instead I suggest: use some pliers to tear the whole metal strip off, if you can. Don't break the wires!
