Need help finding

#1 Post by jronald » Sat Dec 30, 2017 9:09 am

I want this as a PCI to mini PCIe
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-PCI-E-Exp ... Swax5YoDXV

I have tons of PCI slots left on the motherboard, would like to add a wireless/BT card (think laptop card)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Wireless ... SwFyhaM4Vp

Thanks
Ron

Something along these lines?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-PCI-To-PC ... 6i_FHkU4hw

Edit: Wait, I'm a dummy - you want a PCI to PCI-E adapter...

This is the closest I could find. http://amfeltec.com/products/flexible-3 ... s-adapter/

2nd one is correct, not so sure why it comes as a dongle?

Good plan but what is going on with your desktop computer? If mATX then that's the problem, see if you can look into swapping out for ATX motherboard and proper case instead?

PCI is not same as PCIe on everything going on with signaling protocol and voltages and incurs extra expense due to conversion chipset spent on a low value computer unless it is greatest need like for work and computer is very specific, but for consumer, not so worth it. (Mini PCIe is based on PCIe.) Also there is no driver for 2000, XP for AC wifi, and windows 7 and 10 is too much for very old computer like PIII and P4 which is usually limited to 2GB (notebooks) and 4GB desktops. C2D boards (oldest ones is 3.0-3.5GB limited) and later ones can do 8GB is preferred with 7 and 10.

Not all those who wander are lost.

Not to be impolite, but I did not ask for a lesson in Moore's Law. With 4 cores running and 10 SATA ports in use, Im fiddling.

I was doing computing (building and repairing) for close on to 30 years now starting with XT and 286 boards and gifted a crappy then new EazyPC by zenith from my former work (based on Nec V40 "SoC" and partially not compatible then on 386DX, 486DX (did not have SX) and Pentium 100, PII 350 then athlon on VIA (mistake!), Northwood P4, several C2D machines, currently have now this i3-2120 (upgraded from this to i5-3570 then Xeon on same HP Z220), i5-2600s in HP ultra slim 8200, i5-3570 and current xeon E3-1280V2 along with bunch of thinkpads and toshiba, Sony and Acer, Dell notebooks and a chromebook (was free).

You're right yet you do realize this is large investment and a mistake was in motherboard choice when considered for future upgrades/expansion back then. I ran into this same thing before so I learned lesson. (Good example Optiplex 780 with 4 slots, PCIe 16x 2.x and PCIe 1x both in use by GPU and offload TCP Intel PT 1000 ethernet plus unused 2x PCI slots that I cannot use properly. For this reason moved to HP Z220 with 7 slots, 5 PCIe and 2 PCI slots.) Also carefully consider if this an gaming rig as well is all socket 11xx boards later than Sandy Bridge are 16 lanes total plus few 1x lanes from chipset except socket 11xx xeons are 20 lanes plus few 4x and 1x lanes which is lame. May have to look into socket 2011 board for more lanes (40 lanes) or live with 8x lanes for GPU card preferably in PCIe 3.0 mode. And not to mention about remember if you have a PCIe 1.x this is early and slowest, PCIe 2.x is still slower than PCIe 3.0 by factor of 2:1. Also better boards have more sata ports as well besides more PCIe slots.

Also choice of chipset determines total lanes as well. For example Haswell H81 chipset is purposefully limited: 2 memory slots only, very few PCI lanes and PCIe 16 lanes cannot be split into 8x 8x.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

That means you do need to swap out different motherboard to get more PCIe slots, PCI-PCIe adapters is expensive and rare, I found one made by startech costs 80 CDN, requires PCIe to mPCIe adapter is another 10 to 20 dollars if you are not interested in getting one from chinese sellers plus mPCIe AC 7260 card price.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Wandering, is a journey in itself, neither a goal nor something necessarily desired by the wanderer, but it is absolutely necessary. And even if one feels lost into it, that’s how he will achieve mastery and become a symbolic king.
But one has the choice to take the journey to achieve mastery or to stay a fool forever.

I am still wandering, have not found the "right" all in one card.

While not my words, it is my point
