Anyone still using a WD MyBook Live NAS? Last week a global attack wiped thousands of the NAS drives and reset the password to whatever.
I used one - and it got wiped and the PW changed.

Over 970 posts on the main thread. The kicker is that WD knew about one of the vulnerabilities since 2018 and didn't do Anything.
If this is in the wrong area, please feel free to move it.

Re: WD MyBook NAS global attack - wiped drives
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Maybe a nice opportunity to sue the hell out of WD?
I have gone off WD probably around 2008.
Have been a Samsung-fan ever since, starting with their HM160HC.
(I still have one or two of those brandnew.)
My backups nowadays are made individually, via USB, onto a separate 3.5" HDD in its own housing and with its own power supply.
That drive was hooked up to the router at one time, but I took it off there about 4 years ago, exactly for such reasons as you now have encountered.

Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Re: WD MyBook NAS global attack - wiped drives
Hi,
I didn't lose any data or files.
Yeah the MBL was wiped, but that was one of only 6 backups, so once I reset it and got one of my PWs back on. I was able to use it. But I took it off my LAN and powered it off because WD has not corrected the vulnerability (supposedly two lines of code can fix it!), and I replaced it with a Synology DS120j with a Hitachi 6TB HDD in it.
WD has offered data recovery to those who lost files for good, and is offering some sort of "upgrade" to all those affected, but I'm not liking their LAN / NAS products much any longer.
I use a combo of NAS drives and USB connected HDDs. It's incredible how much disk capacity has increased over the past several years.
