So who is still alive 'ere ?

#1 Post by coolcat37 » Sun Nov 30, 2025 3:53 am

My god, since I last actively logged in 'ere, we actually still had a decent world. Back then:
- you could actually find interesting results in your search engine of choice (and you weren't nudged toward searching with AI)
- you still had an internet that was populated with die-hard amateurs (like this one). RIP 95% of forums and obscure, non-commercial knowledge
- websites weren't full of sockpuppets and bots
- you still had mental freedom (and weren't self-policing your expressions on the internet (and thus your thoughts) because of not allowed to hurt 'someone else's feelings')
- the internet wasn't cluttered with each websites asking for permissions for cookies + wanting your e-mail address + wanting your location + automatically opening a 'chat window' with some AI algo asking me how it can help
- YouTube wasn't full off no-lifers making silly faces and adding them to their thumbnails to have more hits and likes

2015ish was not 2005, but my god was it infinitely better than 2025. What have we become? What has the entire human experiment become? Some insect society with each node being driven by their borg gadget in their pants/hands..

Thank god I still have some 4:3 screens. Thank god we still have archive.org.

So how is everyone enjoying their Westworld?

Welcome back. :)

This die-hard enthusiast forum seems to have been doing better than many *knock-on-wood*. And it shows a healthy mixture of retro and modern Thinkpadding.

FWIW I'm just now discovering this forum! I've had a T480 for a couple of years and looking into modding it.

Welcome back. :)
Thanks to you and all the lurking submariners ;)

In the meantime (since 2015ish) the price of T6X caddies went tru the roof. The price of W70X shot up drastically.

Sooner or later I'll have to httrack this very forum, as it's really a goldmine

been sleeping in my lincoln’s trunk since august or so, it really builds an appreciation for the X-series thinkpads, and Elon Musk’s starlink.

It's not just people, certain old Thinkpads are still alive and selling well on Ebay, often for huge amounts of money. There's a T61 (not even a P) going for almost £300 at the moment, though in fairness it's got 8GB of RAM.
But as I bought a P52 with 32GB last year for less than half that much, I do wonder where these prices are coming from. The T61 is arguably the best ever Thinkpad in aesthetic terms (and ignoring planar problems), but even so.

That's... quite an "unorthodox" opinion you have there.

thb, that Thinkpad you're referring to.. no-one in his right mind would pay 300 quid for that listing. we're talking about a buy-it-now listing for a 16:10 T61 with X7900 + 8gb ram. Just the fact alone that it's 16:10, makes it uninteresting.

If you want a well maintained/well kept dinosaur T601 4:3 with UXGA (LED), totally specced out with an Ultrabay HD and a NMB unshiny keyboard + the right 9cell batts with good health, then 300 quids, why not. A purring fan, all the plastics in good condition, a 4:3 screen to read docs. Yes, absolutely, for those who dual drive their laptop needs with 16:9 for entertainment and 4:3 for docs, a FrankenPad has to be there.

More and more that 4:3 form ages finer and finer.

I don't disagree. But the owner seems to think it is/was worth it.

Educate me. In what way do you feel the T60 is aesthetically superior to the T61?

not op but T60 has the more-popular more-symmetric LCD bezels and the legacy/classic 15” case option. to-date no ThinkPad after the W701 offers more physical height than 15” T60. the modern 16” 8:5 aspect-ratio laptops are only as tall as the old 14” 4:3.

T61 is usually regarded as okay or ugly. im a fan of the equally ugly T500 so I like the T61.

and this, ladies and gentlemen, is my biggest gripe with the modern laptops. the reason why I maintain a fleet of redundant technology. the 4:3 vertical space.
sooner or later they will see the effect the forced 16:9 adaptation had in the meshed schism of the world population.

Side by side, the difference is quite obvious. The thick asymmetric screen bezels (an different-width hinges) of T61/T400/T500 are not very pleasing to the eye.

Ok, I see what you mean. I have never owned a T60, so was unaware of the differences.

However, I view a laptop as a tool, and assume that the designers are making their decisions for good engineering reasons, rather than aesthetic ones. I therefore accept this kind of thing, and am grateful that the machines look as good as they do. I look at them as fine machines, rather than as works of art.

There are of course a number of ways (I am judging from phototgraphs) in which the T60, too, is not exactly symetrical. But presumably they don't worry you.

I don't know about meshed schisms, but I do love the 4:3 screen on my T42. If I were a writer, I would use that machine for word-processing.

Still, getting back again :D

You're not the only one, old boy...great to hear that you're on the mend.... :thumbs-UP:

I'm still nursing two ThinkPads I have left, and wondering which path to take when they decide to drop dead. A Linux-running-desktop with a ThinkPad USB keyboard, maybe? Haven't owned a desktop since the '90s... 8)
