HP Probook 455 G3 F/S Advice

#1 Post by Vopu » Thu Sep 24, 2020 4:57 pm

Hi guys,
Hope i am not putting this in the wrong place , afterall , i had my telling off today :(
I would like get your opinions for a HP probook i may sell so that i can invest on a Thinkpad instead. :D I kind of think of base W series with upgrade possibility to 16/32GB and i7 option for 15.4 but so far very happy with my T440P. I like the idea i can upgrade everything , so that is the aim on the new thinkpad if i can manage.
I generally do not sell stuff and prices do differ alot on ebay. I can see AMD A8 versions and rarely A10 quad's.Unit is in very good condition ,no scratch , clean, comes with 45W original adapter. Fan revs up a bit (i can replace before sell) and battery does not hold charge(replace b4 sell) , bought 2017
Here are the Spec's from HP:
-AMD A10-8700P APU with Radeon R6 Graphics (1.8 GHz, up to 3.2 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 4 cores)
-Windows 10 Home 64 /recovery partition
-15.6-inch diagonal HD* anti-glare LED-backlit (1366 x 768)
-8 GB Ram (16GB max)
-1TB HDD
-HP Camera (720p HD)
-DVD RW
- Realtek 802.11b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0 Combo
-2 USB 3.0 Ports / 2 USB 2.0 Ports /1 HDMI /1 VGA /RJ-45 /Ethernet/ 1 Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack/ 1 Power Adapter connector/ SD/SDHC/SDXC
Detailed spec's here if needed

Any advice will be highly apreciated.
Thanks

Apart from brand name, keyboard and lack of a trackpoint, the first other things that need to change to make it any interesting are:
- HD TN screen, replace with FHD IPS (1920x1080)
- Realtek b/g/n wifi, replace at least with Dual-Band Intel AC-8260 a/b/g/n/ac (IF that machine even has 2 antenna wires...)
- replace HDD with 250/500GB SSD, fresh install OS
- replace CD/DVD-drive with caddy to put in above (freshly formatted) HDD

Just my €0.02
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

there's no point putting lipstick on a pig

i think its clear that laptops like the above are what people would call "mass market laptops for the unwashed masses'

there's no point doing much upgrades if your intention is to sell

even if you were to do ssd and fhd upgrades the reality if the unit is held back by the cpu

i assume its bga and not upgradeable

if you were to upgrade it would be the hdd and perhaps the chassis has the ability to use the slow hdd as a 2nd storage drive

:D
I was in two minds on this , upgrade & increase resell value or sell as is :( i have thought of same upgrades like realblackstuff but i cant justify spending a lot for this unit.
Maybe i will throw in a 250GB SSD and HDD cady to make it a bit fancy. Point is what ever i get will be going to a new Thinkpad and i want to get the best value.
I just did a fresh Win10 Pro but kept recovery partition. For some reason (Slic i guess) reverted back to Home after activation. I am ok with £220-260. It is in perfect working order and not a single scratch.I think it is reasonable for a 3 year old mass produced junk
And yeah the cpu is bga needs a new MB to replace but AMD A10-8700P APU, which is what i have, already the top of the range for 455 G3. So no go there
