Is it possible to get UDMA on a 760LD with Win98 SE ?

#1 Post by aka_mgr » Sat Mar 14, 2026 4:56 pm

Hello,
I have reinstalled Windows 98 SE on my oldest Thinkpad, a 760LD (Pentium 90 Mhz) but I haven't been able to activate UDMA and disk transfer are thus really slow. Can anyone point me to the required driver ?
I have checked available drivers here and there without success so far...

Linux seems to be able to take advantage of UDMA transfers on the same computer, but with only 40MB of RAM, I would prefer to stay with Windows 98 Second Edition.

Thanks !

IIRC UDMA (33 megabytes/sec) first appeared in the Intel 430TX chipset (with 82371AB southbridge) used in the Thinkpad 770, 380XD, and contemporary models.

Check if you can enable DMA mode 2 (16.6 MB/s)-- IIRC my 760XD does, but it's a newer model than your 760LD and may have a different chipset.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
