Compatible SSD’s and Recommendations for a Thinkpad 770X

About a month ago, I bought a cheap HDD off of Amazon to upgrade my 770X to 40gb and it’s already getting bad clusters and lots of crashes. I’ve tried a 128 SSD I had on hand prior but it wasn’t recognized but I know it’s supposedly possible to get an SSD working. For those of you that have upgraded, what would you say is the most reliable memory upgrade?

Get something smaller, between 16 and 64 GB. Try looking for M.2 SATA 2242 SSDs
like this one and put it in an M.2 to 2.5" IDE adapter.

Just got the M2 SATA today but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working either. Maybe I'm missing something...either way thank you for the response. I'm still open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Thank you for the response! I was able to get a 64GB one and now I'm trying to get it to boot. It looks like the laptop recognises it because I can put my win98 installation CD in and it offers to either boot from the Disk or the CD. However, choosing either leaves me with a blank screen with a curser blinking. Any idea on if I can do something about the BIOS to fix this?

You're probably running into a BIOS limit.
This webpage mentions that some BIOSes from mid-1999 or earlier can only handle 31.5GB HDDs. :O
Unfortunately I don't have a computer that old, so I can't test possible solutions.
One thing that comes to mind is to use an ATA/IDE command to reduce the capacity of the hard disk.
Another approach is to boot Disk Manager and install a DDO (dynamic drive overlay). I remember doing that on a Pentium MMX233 laptop (possibly Toshiba) maybe 20 years ago.

That did it! I placed a 16GB subsitute in there and it worked without a hitch! I wonder why the requirements are stricter for non HDD storage though. The bad hard drive I had initially put in there was 40 Gb. Either way, happy to have a much more stable memory solution. Much appreciated Axur!
