W530, Win10 Video driver?

I'd upgraded from Win7 to Win10 largely without issue, following all steps and downloading all drivers. And that pretty much worked for months. Then I recently did a restart after some "trivial" Win10 upgrades, and my desktop turned BLACK. Black background, as if I'd set that to the background color. I went to look for the usual old choice of desktop schemes and colors, and it was gone. The new one was mainly yellows and oranges, with NO options to set a custom desktop color.
WTF?
So I tried reverting, no joy. I checked the Lenono drivers, no joy, nothing new there. I contacted NVidia and downloaded THEIR recommended latest "correct" drivers...still no joy. I eventually recovered my old desktop by restoring an older system image, but I still have no idea why using the latest "correct" everything won't give me the old custom desktop options. Which leaves me afraid to install the latest "Creator Update" of Win10 since it may break things again.
And I'd like to try installing that Creator Update because the version I'm running locks down default applications, i.e. it uses the new Windows Movie player for mp4 files, and refuses to let those be changed. Among other locked-down default programs. Really annoying, and of course, MS swears *they* didn't no that.
