This computer had numerous keys that wouldn't work. I replaced the keyboard only to find that it made no difference to the problem. I then tried an external keyboard that does work on all the keys so at this time, I'm assuming a hardware problem. My question is what would be the best way to fix this issue? Replace the motherboard or look for another thinkpad in the same series to assemble a working computer.

Have you tried using contact cleaner on the keyboard connector?

No I have not. I will give that a try
