Power adaptor usb-c -> old thinkpad power connector

#1 Post by pictux » Wed Mar 23, 2022 9:57 am

Hi guys,
as some of you I have together with my brand new t14s, an older Thinkpad.
Often I bring them in the same bag, and I'd like to spare a few hundred grams of the power supply at least; so I was looking for a power adaptor to convert the usb-c to the older connector.
I've seen something like this:

Have you ever tried this kind of adaptor?
Do you think there would be any problem for the ower suply or for the "granny" thinkpad?

Thanks for any tips!

Lenovo itself sells an adapter like this:

As you see, they claim only 45W support. I don't know how it will behave if you connect it to a USB-C adapter that is capable of outputting higher wattage.

The "danger" of using a third-party one that does not correctly negotiate wattage, is that it may present to the laptop a higher wattage than the adapter actually support, risking overdraw, overheating and damage to the adapter (rarely to the laptop).

Hi and thanks for your reply!
Got it.
But I think that the 45w limit is on the output, not in the input!
Said that, if i use it with my x260 maybe it should be ok (45w), instead with the T460 it could work and have a few overheating problems (65w)....

I can personally recommend this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004894071598.html
Been using it with T470 and it's flawless. Advertised as 100W (20V @ 5A). Can't say what kind of charger the laptop recognizes, but there's no difference between this and a regular power brick.
Due to that I've switched to a 3-in-1 200W USB-C brick and been running 3 notebooks off of it.
