T14 Gen3 (Intel) and SSD Samsung 990 Pro 4TB

#1 Post by Jan_888 » Tue Feb 13, 2024 5:54 pm

Hi there,
1. Has anyone successfully installed SSD Samsung 990 Pro 4TB in T14 Gen3 (Intel)?
2. Are you facing the well known 990 Pro rapid health decline even with the latest firmware?
3. Have you observed any other issues (e.g. latency, freezing, excessive heat etc.) ?
4. Is the performance close to what is advertised?
5. Original Samsung heatsink probably doesn’t fit in, are you using it without heatsink or with a different heatsink – which? Whichever way you have it - is it getting really hot?
6. Any other experience worth mentioning?

Thanks for your experience.

All the SSDs I've had have been fast and of the many I've owned, only one has failed and it was like seven years old.

The only SSD that has died on me was an early mSATA one I had installed on my X220. 128GB Samsung, I believe. When it failed it just became write protected. You can still pull your data out.

That generation had cooling issues due the location of the slot. I don't think heat was considered into the design and if you used it hard, it would simply wear (overheat) itself out. That's why well designed models have heatsinks.

For the sake of ecology I donated all my classic Thinkpads.
